I don't know why I can't seem to find the angles on the Benchmade website.

Forum search the sharpie method. I think this will help you out.

Thanks all for the posts. My faith in humanity is newly confirmed. I will try the 20 degree setting and see what transpires.

re: the post from the good Dr-if the Lansky has so many built in defects then why did you say,'The Lansky gets things sharp as hell."?

For practical usage the small imperfections introduced by the Lansky are far outweighed by those introduced by all but the most skilled manual knife sharpeners among us using other methods. I could give a %$#@@@!!! whether 1 or 2 mm of my blade are off angle by 0.11356 degrees, approximately. In practice, my Lansky generated 20 degrees will be much better than the 56 years of experience with a whetstone that I have accumulated. That's why I bought the Lansky, afterall!

Thanks again for all the help.

I used regular Arkansas stones for many years, and it was a long time before I really knew how to get an edge. Back in the '80s, I used a Smith's Tri-Hone with the little plastic ramp that you used to judge the blade angle against the stone. Blades immediately got sharper.

Then, several years ago, I got the Smith's set with the blade clamp, quite similar in operation to the Lansky. Man, I thought I couldn't possibly make a blade any sharper without some kind of machine.

Now, I have an Edge Pro Apex. Still not their top-of-the-line model, but head and shoulders above the blade clamp setup. Face-shaving sharp. And I don't even have the finest tapes for polishing, either.

And ya know what? There's a larger, more stable model of sharpener that could improve my edge even more.

The point of this story, I guess, is to say that I really enjoy improving my sharpening ability, and in order to do it, I need a better, more stable tool than a Lansky. The Lansky (and the Smith's) will put a very sharp edge on just about any blade...enough to cut whatever you want to with it. But the difference between it and what I use now is marked. The edge is so well mirror-finished that I can see the sharp reflections on it, the entire length.

I guess that makes me an edge snob Big Grin

I'm just as retentive when reloading ammo. I'll trim every case, mic them, prime them, then weigh each bullet and group them by weight. I weigh every powder charge, and seat each bullet by hand.

Maybe it's the old, retired G.I. in me, but I find that knives and firearms both function well when they are looked after properly, but they function best when looked after expertly. If you get to try an EdgePro or similar product, you'll see the difference, and whether or not you need it yourself is a matter of choice.
