With regards to the NIB sharpness. I visited a local gun/knife dealer just yesterday. I am interested in a Benchmade with a D2 blade, possibly the 710D2. I also wanted to see/handle the 275. Unfortunately, the dealer only had a 583-1; I am not fan of the Tanto blade however I did notice the poor grind on the edge of the display model. Even if I was interested, the workmanship reminded me of a blade displayed at K-Mart in a blister pack from China. I left without comment.
Anyone else notice this on D2?

I've only picked up one D2 blade lately (a 912 stryker), and it was extremely sharp out of the box.

perhaps the fact it was a display model could have something to do with it. maybe the dealer took a grinder to it to prevent stupid people from cutting their own fingers off???

just saying...

...if so, then that dealer needs to be crucified!

People handling sharp objects should know better & be extra careful when handling unknown units ...

Also, what would be perfectly acceptable & super sharp to someone else might not nearly meet my expectations, because I am anal about such things....many, many people do not really know what a really scary sharp blade / edge looks /feels like....perhaps us knife nuts are a little spoiled...?

....just my 2c...

Just got my 480-1. Nice. But the edge needs more work. Not only is it not razor sharp, the blade is not symactric and the thumbstuds rattle. On another note, 581 got my attention. Sadly, I find the handle a tad too thick and the knife could loose some weight.

Hi Blackie,

Sorry to read about the 480 issues. Either return it to the place you got it from for another, and ask them to check it, or send it to Benchmade for warranty service. You can always call them at 800-800-7427 and ask for Customer Service.

If you need it here's the link to the printable warranty return document:
http://www.benchmade.com/services/warranty.aspx

When sending if you choose that route: always keep the box, bag and paperwork home. Just wrap the knife carefully and mail it Priority with Insurance and Delivery Confirm. Make a copy of your shipping receipt and send it separately to Benchmade, they will reimburse you for your trouble.

Hope that helps!

Now, for the ordinary person, agreed, the NIB sharpness would stir a wow, but there is still too much potential hidden in that super steel, just waiting to be unleashed, with a EP Pro, finishing with a 30k Shapton Pro stone, then stropping on 0.25 / 0.1 / 0.025 poly diamond spray, on horse butt leather & finally just on clean paper over plate glass...

Re-profiled to a 15* relief edge per side, with a 20* per side micro bevel.

...and my Benchmade 480-1 Shoki has been ordered and is on it's way...
