An update of my post of 03/20/10.

After using the 1101-2 pen for about a week, I noticed that the coating was coming off where the carbide tip mates with aluminum barrel. I also noticed that the aluminum was gouged in the same area. When I used the pen, I put the cap on the end of the barrel. It appeared that the screws holding the pocket to the cap were causing the problem. I sent the pen back & they replaced the barrel & "adjusted" it. After getting the pen back, the coating started to come off in the same area with just a little gouging. I guess i should send it back again to be repaired. If I had to do it again, I would probably just get a 1100-2.

This "coating problem" is pretty normal and "as expected", I guess. I have an older pen (without carbide tip) and the coating is being worn off, too.

So, I just ordered one with a carbide tip! Smiler Can't wait to get it, though.

I really put the "old" 1100 to good use ( Wink ).

Whats the advantage of carbide over the aluminum for striking soft targets?

Any pen snobs in here? How do you like writing with Benchmade pens?

They write suprisingly well. They are well balanced with the cap off or posted on the opposite end. The stainless pen is very heavy with the cap posted on the opposite end. When I do a lot of writing, I prefer using the aluminum pen because of the weight of the stainless model.

Thanks, Fort Worth Bill... So you usually write with a Benchmade pen?

I noticed that they use a Fisher Space Pen refill, which, of course, I've heard of. But, I've never written with one. Might you tell me: is it smooth or tacky? Or both? (Some ballpoint pens write like they've got glue for ink. Hah!)

That 1100 in Damasteel is looking increasingly attractive, but it's a hell of a lot for a steel ballpoint by a knife company Big Grin

I carried one for a while and I didn't have any problems with the carbide tip tearing my clothing, ist only slightly sharper than the original.

I stopped carrying it because here in CA there's a law that says carrying anything that could be readily used as a stabbing weapon could be a crime. Plus I got the damasteel version, its cooler to look at and I'm pretty sure I could put it through a car window if I needed to. The carbide tip does shatter glass amazingly well, though, ask my old jars Smiler

The Fisher refill is both smooth & tacky but more smooth then tacky. Does that make sense?

The Damasteel is great looking pen but it's a lot of money. The stainless steel pen is also great looking but it's a heavy pen. A while ago, I saw a few Stainless pens for around $120.00 on a popular auction web-site.

Thanks, Fort Worth Bill... I'll have to find a place that actually stocks them and try one out.
