I can't believe there isn't a thread about this awesome knife.
The knife if perfect for everyday carry. It's a black 940, the handle says 'HARLEY-DAVIDSON' and instead of a butterfly on the blade it has the skull. The logo is more discrete than you would think, at least when you're holding it. Opens smooth and fast and came super sharp. The only thing I would change about the knife is being able to get one without the BK1 coating. But being all black makes it a very handsome knife. And I love the clip it came with, it was the only thing on the knife that wasn't black. The clip doesn't scratch easily like other Benchmade clips. But I did take it off to make it even slimmer. The knife fits great in the pocket. This knife was also my first experience with S30V steel and I am very impressed with the steel. If you are thinking about getting a 940 and want the BK1 coating then look at the 13940. But I don't really see the need for the coating on a stainless steel, I think it's for appearance in this case. |

I still don't understand why BM discontinued the 942 and kept the 940, but I do like the appeal of the black Harley Davidson 13940SBK. Glad you're enjoying it.

I would guess, and this is a big guess, that it was just so they would not have to etch the same blade with two different numbers?? Just a little more efficient.
However, what I don't understand is why they do not offer the 940 w/ a choice of scale colors, sorta like the 950 or 960. Maybe to avoid making the 942 owner angry?? There has to be a reason which we are not privy to. What I also am curious about is why a larger dealer wouldn't order a run of 940's with black handles, as I would think these would probably outsell the green version. I am talking a run of 20 like with BK blades etc, not an entire LE run. But maybe this would anger other deals who stock only the green version and don't turn the volume necessary to order a small run. Who knows, I am just thinking out loud... -Trevor 525-701 (Hybrid), 552DLCM4-500, 558M2-600, 558DLCM4-500 (x3), 780 (P), 941BC1 (B), 941BC1 (R), 941BC1 (G), 960 Pearl (P), 960-02 (x2), 960-BLU, 960BC1-20, 960-400 |

I could be wrong, ckn, but I would assume that anodizing a handle a different color is more troublesome or more expensive than just coating or not coating different blade configurations.

I agree, but I meant they already have the black scales for the 943 right, so its not a big deal to just put in a different blade. Call it a 940GN and a 940BLK or something. -Trevor 525-701 (Hybrid), 552DLCM4-500, 558M2-600, 558DLCM4-500 (x3), 780 (P), 941BC1 (B), 941BC1 (R), 941BC1 (G), 960 Pearl (P), 960-02 (x2), 960-BLU, 960BC1-20, 960-400 |

Trevor, a gun store near my house did exactly that except with satin blades. Black handled 940's ordered special.

Anyone know how I could go about getting the white lettering off the scales without doing damage?
