Anybody notice that some of Benchmades blades have uneven grinds on them?

I bought a 556 and a 585 in the course of a week and on inspection turning the blade over on both of the knives the angles are not symmetric the grinds???? Is this usual for a $100 price range and to be expected or should I be sending an email to Benchmade?

I'd post pictures but I have a Mac and can't figure out how...

Is it usual? I'm not sure... But I've seen it before on the new Presidio Ultras.. So it does happen... The guy who it happened to said Benchmade told him to send the knife in and they'd take care of it... Not sure if they just replace the blade or what.

Hopefully it doesn't become more frequent than it already has.

I think they are ground by hand, so wouldn't call it unusual..There will always be some variance..some more than others though, thats for sure..I sent a TSEK back once that was really uneven, BM replaced the blade.

Either I was lucky or Benchmade has improved the QC on the Presidio Ultra. The grind on my new one is perfect.

I agree the blades are hand ground which 'splains the variances. What I always wonder is what they do with all of those blades that come in to the factory that get replaced. Do they get recycled, tossed, or is there a more sinister plot?? Who knows...

I really doubt any benchmade is handground. Im sure the final sharpening is done by hand and that would explain the differences.

Handground blade = custom.

I remember reading here that the only hand ground part of the 556 was the swedge. I seriously doubt that the actual blade grind (the hollow grind on a 527 for example) is done by hand. That's the part that was WAY off on my Mini Presidio Ultra. And yes, they replaced the blade. With one that was only slightly better, but still noticeably different from one side to the other. A small amount of variance is acceptable, but mine was well beyond that. I'm sure the problem has been solved by now. Wink
