I finally got my new 420 Resistor yesterday. My first item - clip removal (I carry 'in' my pocket.). Lower screw - no problem. Upper screw... oops! I finally got it, but it took overnite with a drop of good old high VOC lacquer thinner on the threads to soften their threadlock. Still, the somewhat stripped head was a chore, my Kershaw tool with a plastic top on it's end so my palm could bear down on the tool, hopefully keeping it within the Torxx remnants as pliers were used to totate the knurled tool body. My wife kept it from rotating on my desk. It worked, thank goodness. The thinner must have softened the threadlock, whose white remnants sure looked like CA glue (Not that I'd ever use that...), because doing the same thing last night didn't budge it - just jumped the Torxx hole, nearly ruining it. Drilling the head off wouldn't have helped, either. This knife had the little yellow paper reminder that the clip could be swapped, too. Ironic!

Two questions:

1. Why do they glue them in place when they offer alternative positions?

2. Where can I get replacement screw(s)?

The good news - out of acetone, I was happy to see lacquer thinner soften the glue.

Supe knife - looks/feels great less the clip!

I have never seen Benchmade use glue on any knife.

I have had 420, 420BK, 420SBK, 4200, 4200SBK and none of them had anything on them.

Call Benchmade and they will send you the clip screws for free.

Enjoy that bad boy it is one heck of a knife!

I've removed some of my clip screws on my BMs to see some adhesive, which I assume is LocTite, on the threads. I make the educated guess that BM, as well as other companies, put adhesive on the threads of the screws to prevent them from backing out when the knife owner doesn't want them to intentionally.

I've seen and heard people complain about screws coming out that were supposed to keep the pocket clips secured only to lose their knife or come close to it. The adhesive should prevent this incident from happening, but it appears there was too much on the threads of your one screw.

Morning...I got my 580 Proto lightly used and in replacing the clip and screws found one really tight that stripped. Got it out with a T-7 and patience, it had either glue or Loc-Tite on the threads.

Duh... went to the home page here - 800# - clip set on the way. Also, they use Blue Loctite on the clip screws, according to the nice warranty service lady.

This 420 is N I C E !!

PS The 615 is no slouch, either!

Next time try and heat up the screws with a hair dryer, it usually helps loosen the locktite. Glad it all worked out.

+1

Sometimes that loctite just doesn't want to give, a little heat will do the trick. Some people use the tip of a soldering iron.

I just bake mine. Set the oven to low...(275 Degrees), and bake for 3 minutes. The screws will come out real easy after that. Use an oven thermometer though, to make sure the temp is accurate.

Easiest thing I have found is a hot soldering iron is all you need, a few seconds with the tip inside the screw head and whoala! Every screw backs out without issue.

Just a tip from a dude who got tired of stripping screws.

if all else fails a small screw extractor work very well, make sure you predrill the head.
