Ok people here's a question. Now that I have a sebenza, I can no longer tolerate any blade that isn't as sharp or sharper than a razor blade and polished to the very edge. I cannot even see a single grind line with the naked eye and barely under my 14x jewlers loop. I have been doing a lot of research and have concluded that a paper wheel set-up on a 6" buffer is my best bet . When done properly with wax and abrasive compound and then a finish polish with jewlers compound, there shoul not be even close to enough heat to alter the temper of the edge. Professional sharpeners and many or most production manufactures are using some power grinding method to sharpen and it's never an issue. So save the argument that using a power buffer or bench grinder will screw up tempers...there is way too much evidence it doesn't.
So my question is does anyone use this method? Any problems or tips? Sounds superior to the edge pro in terms of ease and results but have no experience with either to compare.

Thanks RxEnergy. That was a helpful link to prior post. I didn't see any comparison to Edge pro however. I am interested in knowing if any of the guys who have both feel one is superior to the other before I lay down the cash for either or even both as the case may be. DJ? You have both I believe based on past posts any preference?

OK, I have both. You can get the same quality edge on paper wheels, as you can on edge pro, but in fraction of a fraction of time. It does take some practice, but not much. I'll allow dj to chime in and tell his side of the story, he just started using paper wheels today.

I just used mine today for the first time ....... with that said , if you can freehand sharpen good , then the paper wheels are the way to go. Its gonna take some practice though (for me).
Its being able to hold a constant edge , thats the trick.........
Ive sharpened 3 Sh** knives first and then started on my BM user (13150-1) ........ where it takes 15 to 20 minutes on the edge pro (estimate) it only takes two minutes on the Paper wheel.
The edge pro gives you a true straight edge everytime with out much talent involved , and the paper wheel is all about being able to hold the knife at the same angle all the way acroos the blade. Shorter and non curved blades are eassier.
I still need practice , this is not an instant thing here , but it is good and gets a super sharp job in an edge pro 30 minute or more task.
If you can hold an angle ...... then its the way to go.

Another thing here ...... you really NEED to do the Sh** knives first .......probably more of them than I did ...... Just to find that comfortable spot in holding your angle , I now use the top area of the wheel , I find that I can hold the knife more even in the top area.
And again Its not as hard as I thought it was gonna be......... practice is the key here ......
I still need practice but I see it comming .........
Even with my beginner blades Ive done , the edge may not look superb , but boy are they SHARP ....... it would of took the edge pro quite a while to accomplish what I did in a couple of minutes.
Now to work on the looks ........Constant angle across the edge is the key ...... dj

If the big problem with the paper wheels is keepinig the angle constant, I bet some enterprising individual on this forum will quickly devise a small adjustable bracket to rest the blade on as it is drawn across the paper wheel.

If you can visualize it...you can create it. Smiler

This is a tricky question , The bottom of the wheel is spinning toward me but the top is spinning away Big Grin
READ THE DIRECTIONS of the spin of the wheel , this is IMPORTANT .....You want the spin of the wheel to go away from the blade edge , not into it ........ you,ll see why as you look at the wheel , it can cause the blade to kick out of your hands and Lord knows where it will end up Eeker.
RX is the most experenced here , let him chime in and give better advice ........ I got my advice from him and reading the directions.
It really is a good way to get a SUPER SHARP EDGE , in a quick amount of time (2 min.)tops

If you can drag the knife across the wheel on the edge , you get a Hell-A sharp knive...
If you can drag it across evenly , you get a Hell-A sharp knife with a smooth even edge Big Grin

Here's the deal, if wheels spin away from you hold the knife the way I did in the video, if wheels spin towards you hold the knife edge down in front of the wheel, or WEAR GOGGLES (you should anyway) and hold knife on top of the wheel with edge facing you. Try each setup and see which one works for you best.
