If mine gets any worse, I will send it in. But, I'm not sure what can be done to fix it. I think it's an issue with the combination of AO and Axis. I think that the blade is coming out so hard that it is rebounding a little before the Axis can fully engage. Maybe the only fix is stronger omega springs on the Axis lock, I don't know.

I agree with Chang, and follow a plan of most always waiting for the knives to be out in the market awhile before buying one. Great example of this was my (had to have!) original 745 Deja was First Production and arrived with both vertical and horizontal blade play that didn't get resolved after three trips. It got traded and later on I got one that remains perfect in every way. On the 585, the comments seem to be universal about the handle scales, and not creating a way to mount the clip to the frame is an even greater issue - let alone having to remove the left scale to adjust the pivot if (when) needed. Seems like the "innards" of the knife are OK though. I'd hate to see this go the 'LE' route, the 585/580 models beg for better scales. I see black G-10 as a good solution for this, and since the scales are so easy to remove, make this one a user upgrade at a decent price!! 350, 520, 525BK-1101, 530, 580-1102, 580 Proto, 583-1, 585-1, 710-1, 710-2, 710D2, 710HS, 722, 732, 740, 740 Proto, 741, 745, 746, 746-1201, 750, 790, 800, 800HS, 805-1101, 810, 812, 830, 831, 835HS, 840, 845, 890, 905, 907D2, 910, 910SCG, 912D2, 913D2, 12400 Proto, 12410, 14205, 14210, 40022-100. I totally agree with you chang. lol I normally do not buy brand new product lines, this was my first time buying a first run product and I guess I got what was coming to me. All in all I do love the look and the feel of the knife with tthe exceptions that everyone else has already refered to.

Yes, yes, yes! I've mentioned this before, but I hope BM is seriously considering a scale upgrade. I doubt it will happen as an upgrade, but I would at least like to see another version with G10. I hope BM is listening... I think there might be a problem with the clip mounting to the G10 scale though. Their biggest mistake, clip mounted to the scale

What we have coming to us when we buy a quality, factory new knife, is a product that the maker has wrung out and tested for potential problems, PRIOR to putting it on the market. Benchmade usually does a better job, that's why they can command a premium in the market. HK14205 585 520

After reading all these comments on this knife, I decided to actually buy one and see for myself. It's too easy to pick something apart from a distance. Just found one on the classifieds here and went for it. I should know in a few days what I really think of the knife. Outcome #1 I find I like it and have a new EDC, #2 I get all fussy, because it isn't "perfect" and it goes back on the classified forum here, #3 I find that there is enough to like about the knife that I figure out how to tweak it to be closer to what I DO like. Well my new 585 arrived today and I can give my first impressions. The handle material didn't bother me at all. After reading, and hearing, what a "plastic" cheap feel it had, I was expecting something much worse. I was very pleasantly surprised. To me, it feels solid and I liked the pebble grain surface on it. My one issue with the handle is, there isn't enough of it. My hands are fairly large, not catcher's mitt large, just plain large. The handle seemed small and I kept wanting to choke up on the knife. My current edc is a Buck Sirus. The blade on the Buck is only 1/8 inch longer, at most. The handle on the Buck is 1/2 of an inch longer. That half inch makes a big difference to my grip on the knife. I do like the small swell in the handle of the 585, just behind where it meets the spine of the blade. It provides a good rest for my thumb when slicing. It's that small spot that has me thinking that I could get used to using the knife on a regular basis. The blade steel on the 585 is superb, the edge and the grind are excellent. The fit and finish of the Benchmade are superior to those of the Buck. The assisted opening on the Mini Barrage is fast and positive. The knife opens easily I've found two ways of opening the knife, using the AO function. One is by pushing forward on the stud, from behind it, the second way is by pushing out on the stud on the opposite side using the top of the fingernail of my middle finger. The knife can also be flipped open like any axis lock, while holding the lock back. THe spring tension makes closing the knife a 2 hand proposition. There you have it. My first 15 minutes with the knife. So far, I haven't cut, sliced, stabbed or mashed anything with the knife. I've only opened the box and opened the knife a couple of times. If I wasn't clear about something, let me know and I'll try to clarify. cadjak EDIT: After spending more time with this knife, I'm finding that I like it a lot. I've adapted the way I hold the knife and I now feels more secure. The smaller size is now something I have come to appreciate. It's assisted opening still is a bit of a mixed bag. I think that the two hand closing is just the price of the fast, assisted opening. Simply a trade off. I'll see how that works out for me as more time passes. This message has been edited. I have had my Mini 585 for a week now. Am very satisfied with the knife - the Open is phenomenal. It is my #1 knife now - everything else sat on my dresser this week.
