Today I went to San Francisco and made a side trip to the WeBe place that sells
Knives and picked up one of the '09 527 models in PE satin.

I'm not sure where the "Ultra" part comes into play, but this is a very nice knife done in Noryl GTX with a hollow ground 440c blade. Lemme tell you the blade on this thing is razor sharp, centered, Axis smooth but also really light.

I, for one, have a problem with how easily 6061-T6 stuff scratches and scuffs. The Noryl GTX creates a nearly bombproof combination and I'm pleased with the results.

One question though not explained in the '09 catalog (while there I got both the LE and 'Civvie' catalogs...!) is there's a coating on the GTX that BM calls "EDM Finish". It's not shiny at all. You guys have any idea what EDM is or does?

While there, I got to play with the Nagara and it's nice looking. The release mechanism is very simple - the button pushes the cutout in the liner aside to open the blade and in the reverse to close. This knife is more of a Gentleman's knife IMO, I like it.

Also while there they had one of the 950-1 black G-10 scaled Rifts, and let me tell you it's a great option (and didn't we ask for it??) The black is SO much cooler than the charcoal - I'd love it if BM would offer the scales only as an upgrade!

Anyway, there it is. The '09's are definitely out in the flow.

Possibly, if Benchmade offers the same option as they did with models before where a minimum order of 20 pcs. has to ordered from the dealer or individual requesting the BK plain edge...

Looks like another winner with the 527 (seems to be catchy, as some other folks I've come in contact like it).

Without mallace, I hope the haters of Noryl read this....don't knock it till you try it Wink.

Joe, from what you've described here, that sounds erillie like my Cabelas's grip that I got a while back (sorry for the mispell there). Silky smooth, silly sharp blade....I hadn't had it for 10 minutes when I sliced myself in the car on the way out.

EDM ??? Hmmm....can't say I've heard of it. From the sound of it, I suppose it's some sort of protectant. Of what, I've no clue (maybe more resistant to scuffs and little dings).

New 950 sounds cool. And Joe, you brought up another very pertinent point too. BM does listen to us. I know a certain kitty-kitty in post number 5 that groveled for one Wink.....Just teasing Chang Big Grin. Looks like your dream has come true Big Grin. I guess BM does what they can for us. I know a lot of folks aren't too happy, but I think BM tries their best (hey, there's always some other stuff out there too if you ain't happy....my way of thinking is: why be miserable ???)

Anyway, I digress.....

Nice to see the option is out there. Of course, it's nothing new. The Ares was available in a variety of flavors as well. Nice to see BM go back to their roots a little.

Still love my plain jane 950 though. Still clicking along nicely. And I have gotten a few remarks from some non knife folks ("hey, that looks pretty neat"...et al). Even for it's size, it doesn't seem to scare folks away.

Just figured I'd throw that little tidbit for you haters of the two tone Big Grin

Wink

And of course, the blade shape, like the 940 is still the conversation piece too Smiler.

Crazy....but that's how it goes.....

Big Grin
