Got the 890 Torrent in today...First Production 648/1000. (Thanks Roger) I was really excited about this knife b/c I carried a 672 and 670 for about two years.

The Torrent is slightly longer than the 67x. I really like the way it feels in the hand. You'll notice that most of the pics are a comparison against the 672 which I believe is the knife with the most similarities.

The 154 blade came out razor sharp...no surprise there. The blade is very thin compared to the thick D2 blade found on the 672. It is probably about the thickness of the Dejavoo.

For those of you that were hoping to avoid the cone shaped thumbstuds on the 67x, the Torrent uses them as well. However, the cutaway in the handle allows for much easier access. I had originally thought the Torrent would use the standard ambidextrous thumbstuds but I guess that got changed. Oh well the knife is definitely set up for right hand use.

Another similarity to the Dejavoo is the deep carry pocket clip. The G-10 handle seems to be well made. The lanyard hole on the knife is not overly pointed which I really like and I suppose could be used as a non-lethal striking point.

The nitrous system works much smoother than the optimiser system. The only problem I have is that once the nitrous system is engaged my thumb tends to sink into the handle of the knife b/n the g-10 handles.

Overall, I'm really happy with the knife. A solid addition to the BM line. It probably won't be a legend like the 710 or 730 but it is a nice follow-up to the 67x series with some of the features of the Dejavoo blended in.

Good review, Joe.

I just traded my 672 in a deal for something else. While the knife wasn't bad this looks like a great replacement with some nice touches. It's a compliment to the 740/745 right down to the clip, and I like the blade shape!

Thanks for the comparison pics, they really help.

Yes, excellent review. I just got to handle the Torrent today as well. I concur with everything that you said. One thing that stood out to me was that the Nitrous system seems to be getting smoother with each model that Benchmade utilizes it with. With the Nitrous Stryker, I always noticed that it required a little more effort to initiate the opening, whereas the Torrent takes less force before the Nitrous assist takes over.

WHY is it SO HARD to put DOUBLE SIDED THUMBSTUDS ON A KNIFE??????

Argggghhhh!!!

I have been looking forward to this knife and the 760 Lum, and both of them are a slap in the face to lefties.

We don't ask much - just make it so we can at least open the darned thing with our strong hand.

I guess that's one more highly anticipated Benchmade to cross off my list. Frowner

I will say that the knife opens really easily and can be opened via the left hand. However, the pocket clip is not reversible and I would not put this one in my pocket without a clip. If you do, you might have a small problem Big Grin

Hey guys,

I'm sure you will figure this out but just be careful when handling the Torrent. The cutaway in the handle does allow one to easily disengage the liner lock with the right index finger.

Nice lines, looks good in "real" pics. Bummer that it's tip down only though.

Someone brought this to my attention earlier, but, on the model that I handled yesterday, the liner lock does not seem to be making contact with the tang of the blade when engaged. The lock will prevent the blade from folding, but if no pressure is put on the blade in the motion of closing, the liner lock pretty much moves freely. I hope that makes sense, but I was curious if you encountered the same thing JoeJutsu?
