The 641 was my most recent purchase. Man, I love this knife. It's the perfect large folder for me. The ergos are excellent. The design is smooth and elegant while also having an aggressive quality. Not much I can add, but it's a true slicer.

Finally picked up a 741.
I like the handle and blade shape, but I do wish the blade were thicker. I showed mine to a few friends and they noticed the relative blade thinness, also. I guess one expects a beefy looking knife to have a thicker blade. |

I also picked up a 741 recently and I LOVE the knife, I am curious to see if Benchmade will release a mini onslaught...

The blade is definitely thinner than what the trends have set lately for a larger folder. This isn't really a bad thing.
The 741's blade starts out at a respectable .121" or 3.07 mm. This is comparable to a Spyderco Police 3, which starts out at 3 mm (.118 mm) thick. The 710 has a slightly thinner blade at .115" or around 2.92 mm, but we're splitting hairs.  The grind angles likely vary between the much deeper width of the 741 versus a 710 but I don't have the tools to measure that.Many larger knives have relatively thick grinds. A Rukus has a .15" (3.8 mm) thick blade, and tapers less sharply to the point. Some people want to feel like a knife can be a multi-tool if they ever crash land in a remote wilderness. However, the 741's blade can cut through things a lot less resistance than the thicker grinds of a Rukus or ZT 0200. The large swedge of the 741 tapers almost to an edge and is quite large. I think this, coupled with the full flat grind creates the illusion of the blade being even thinner than it actually is. Either way, strength should be of little concern unless you're batoning or prying. Successful knives such as the Spyderco Military have been used in the field for many years with relatively thin tipped blades. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Hound, |
