Sorry to hear about your unfortunate event. All that I can say is that it had to be a fluke. While I don't own the Barrage, I have handled them and many others appear to own them. These other owners seem to not have a problem with their Barrages. I would definitely say contact BM customer service and they will take care of the problem. Hopefully your view of BM products isn't tainted by this one mistake. I have carried their products for several years and have not had a problem yet, except that I can't seem to get enough of their knives.

My 585 is my new favorite knife.

The open phenomenal. Picked up last weekend in Phoenix at the NRA National Convention.

Subsequently - I now have the Benchmade bug.

I'm sorry to hear about that. This is happening a little too often in my opinion. It's going to create a bad reputation for an otherwise great knife.

I hope my 585 holds up.

After a week my spring broke as well. Though I have to say it works great just as an axis lock. I sent it in to BM and a few weeks later it came back. The good thing about it vs an auto, is when or if the spring fails, it still functions great as an axis lock. Unlike an auto, you are out of luck!

A few weeks? Damn, now I REALLY hope mine doesn't break.

However I do think its just one of those things that happen , (a faulty spring) metal weak from the process of being made. BM has no contol over that I bet , the blame there could be put in a lot of places.

My 585 is still doing wonderful, after being carried every day with few breaks for a few weeks now...

dj I have a Torrent, which is different from the 580/585 assisted opening. The 585/580 blade is under constant tension as the torrent just has tension at a certain point, and if the spring tension fails to open the blade and lock it past a certain point (say you purposefully put your hand in the way to prevent it from doing so) the tension will not be there to follow through with the blade to the locked position.

I love the knife- its a great blade, just different from the 585/580 series.
