Just bought the 585 today from my local gun shop. It's been in the cabinet for a while now so decided to look again at it. Looks like I just found #208 of 1000 of the first run.

I got my 580S coming in sometime this week, can't wait to check it out Big Grin

Figured I'd better grab one before they're ILLEGAL Roll Eyes... or before BM decides to pull'em off the shelves or something......

You'll like it. My 585 is still my favorite.

Hey guys, I posted a while back about my Benchmade 580 breaking after a week.

I went back to the shop that I bought it from and made them give me a brand new knife rather than send the one I had in for repair. Here we are a month later and my replacement knife broke as well. I noticed there was a slight snap when I closed it. A few very slow deployments later, the spring snapped or something (no more assisted opening). Keep in mind that both knives saw very light use before breaking.

The worst part is that when this happens, the blade sticks and you cannot open it anymore.

I really wanted to like this knife, but at this point I recommend that people avoid it. Unless you want to be sending your knife to benchmade every 1-3 weeks, don't get this model.

This is my first Benchmade knife, and it has been a poor experience.

^my 580's spring broke as well, but don't stuck on this "poor experience": benchmade does so many great knives. just try a 710, a rukus, or even a classic griptilian ... you can't be desappointed

Very disheartening to hear that... But thanks for the update...

When I first got my 580 in, I thought "this thing opens too darn hard for its own good..." But I haven't had a problem with it yet... Of course its only been a week...

I'm sorry to hear that this was your first Benchmade experience.. I can all but assure you that this is not the norm... Sure, theres been Quality Control issues here and there (in my opinion), but I've never known a specific knife to have such a poor design that it practically can not be used under normal conditions... I'm not making excuses by any means, but maybe it was just a bad batch of springs? I don't know.. Hopefully Benchmade does, though, and is working on it or has already fixed it.

Don't give up on Benchmade yet! Blue Class

Me too.

I have 2 autos that open as hard or harder with no problems. It seems like the 580 is breaking more than the 585. I have one of each. No spring breakage. Ya know they have sold a ton of these things. Every distributor who gets them (plain edge 580) is sold out in a few weeks. Many online dealers are on their 2nd shipment already. I wonder if the breaking springs are consistent with failure rates of other knives. As noted in another thread, we are a tougher group to satisfy being knife nuts and all.

Hey again guys.

Just thought I would write an update about what is going on with my 580. The first one I bought , the spring broke after a week. I exchanged it, and that one lasted about 2 weeks before failure.

I sent it in to Benchmade to get it fixed. Before I start my rant, I should point out that the customer service people I have talked to so far have been very nice.

Anyway, they kept my knife for almost two full weeks working on it. When I got it back, the action was rough (like there was sand in the action somewhere), the spring made a clicking sound, and the body liner was deforming when the blade was closed to make room for the wound spring. About the 10th time I opened it to try to loosen it up, the spring broke again.

My knife should never have been returned in the condition that it was. Even I knew there was something wrong the first time I opened it.

I hope everyone else is having a better experience than I am. I bought mine locally, and with tax and shipping for repair, my 580 is turning into a VERY expensive paper weight.

I am waiting for Benchmade to open up so I can go through the whole returns process again. If you guys have any suggestions, I am more than open to them at this point?

(BTW I promise that I am not banging my 580 against a tractor or anything. I haven't even dropped it. The heaviest use it has seen is against a cardboard box.)

Well that sucks!
I wonder what is it about the 580/585 that all the springs are breaking on them and not the the AO 615s. Could it be there is not as much mass in the handle to absorb the vibrations from the opening. I really have no clue that is just a guess.
