Hello folks. I recently had my 812 stolen and I haven't seen one come up anywhere to buy so Im looking for a replacement EDC knife.

I don't know much about steels so Im curious if anyone has this knife and can tell me if its a good knife. I am considering it because it has the same handle shape as my 812 and I miss that feel. I am worried though for a couple reasons. One is the handle seems very smooth and Im a sweaty guy. That might be a recipe for disaster. I also think the blade may be a little shorter than I want. It's a 3 inch blade basically, so maybe not. The last issue I have is my 812 was a liner lock, I've never had a lock back. Does anyone have any insight into this particular knife?

I was also considering a mini-griptillian if anyone has a comment about those. Thanks!

I don't own a Pika, so I really have nothing to say about them. I do, however, own a Ritter Mini-Grip, and I love it. The blade is S30V, but I'm not as much of a steel snob as some. I even like the dreaded 440C that so many have kicked to the curb in favor of newer "super steels."

Okay, so the blade isn't perfectly centered - I never cared about that, especially in such an affordable knife. A quick adjustment of the pivot screw, and it's been ready to flick ever since. The blade was the sharpest out of the box of any flat grind I've ever received. It fits in any pocket, and is so light that it's completely unobtrusive.

In short, I love it. I don't know about other models, but mine is everything I now come to expect from Benchmade.

My mini-ritter grip came dull.. REALLY dull - and that was just as my brother received it from aeromedix and he didn't use it...

But in support of the knife: it was sharp 20 mins after i received the package.. Wink

I already had a bm707 and a 710hs so/and I missed the solid feel of the g10 and aluminium handle but i think the griptilian is a nice hard use knife whereas the 707 and 710(and i guess many other BMs, too) are just elegant (somehow) and with a better feel, too - in addition to the 'hard use knife' Smiler

It never ceases to amaze me how different the same model of any product can come off the same assembly line. It seems like 10 can be perfect, then the next five can be lemons. That's "production," I guess.

If you liked the 812 then you will hate the Pika. The Pika is a low end knife intended for the non knife enthusiast. They are cool looking and sharp with good blade steel. However they are not going to last. The Ti version is extremely slippery and will not be to your liking as per your sweaty hands. The pocket clip is a problem too. Because the scales are so slick it has nothing to grab onto and slides back and forth as you open and close the knife. The lock bar can be troublesome when holding the knife tightly (on the Ti only). It can move a bit. The blade will lock up tight but not for long. For the money there are many other choices.

You mention the Mini Grip. This knife is a home run in every department. Blade steel, Axis lock, Grip scales, pocket clip, price and the endless variety of variations available. Simply put, you can not go wrong with the mini-grip.

Hope this helped fizban1397 !!

By the way, no need to buy exotic blade steels for the mini-grip.
The existing blade steel is 154CM and is perfect as is. Really good stuff for an EDC knife and most other applications as well. Much better than the steel found on the Pika as well. The standard Mini-Grip with 154CM is readily available off the shelf of any dealer and the cost is great.

My opinion: nothing current will replace your 812, sorry for your loss. I would suggest keep your search focused on the various knife forums and eBay. (I will send you a PM.) They do show up from time to time and even if a user that would be better than a new Pika II.

I was a bit disapointed with the clip on my mini pika ti scratching the ti slabs as it flexes left and right. Other that than, it's a lockback and on par with Spydercos.

I did see there's a new G10 Harley Davidson Pika, which interests me. If you want something like the 812, that might work, but it's still a lockback, not a linerlock.
