What is wimpy about the military lock, have you had one fail on you? I actually prefer a liner lock to the axis lock and I have many of both. I agree that the axis lock is an innovative good lock but I have not had a quality liner lock fail on me, its a good lock!

Definitely nothing wimpy about it. It's an excellent lock. Nice first post by RukusBeast. Apaprently is not speaking based on experience

both are great knives... theres nothing wimpy about the military...and theres nothing wimpy about the 710

Brj, Thanks for the info man, I was thinking about picking up a military, but now I know I will have to at some point in the near future.

The Military is a modern "classic". The lock is is a pretty good liner-lock, one of the better ones. Blade shape is good cutter, though the point is a bit weak for prying tasks. The knife is light in weight for the blade is carries.

If you seek a good liner-lock, also watch for the old Benchmade 800 series liner-lock knives. I think the liner-locks on the 800 series was better than the Military models lock.

I usually recommend that "newbies" (or anyone for that matter) pick up a Benchmade 710, a Spyderco Military, and a Buck 110. These knives pretty much represent reasonably good knife design and gives one a good foundation to judge future purchases by.

I love it.... "Rukusbeast" says the axis lock sucks.

A couple of points from the original review.

The liner of a liner lock, should be considered a "moving part." It does not move much, but it does move.

The Military is NOT ambidextrous. The lock and clip will be back wards. Why else did Spyderco make a batch of left handed Militaries this past year?

All it takes is one lock failure with a liner lock for you to no longer trust them. I had it happen and almost lost the function of my index finger. The longer you play with them, the less you trust them. They are temperamental to deploy, easy to over ride, and wear too quickly. When they do fail it is with catastrophic results.

That being said, the Military has one of the most reliable liner locks on the market. However that being said I no longer trust my life or hands to one.

If you only use a knife to cut stuff, then a liner lock will never fail you. They don't fail when you cut stuff, they fail when you poke stuff. They also fail when you don't deploy the blade fulling in regards to the lock, and you hit the back of the blade. At which case the knife folds on your fingers, like a paper cutter, with similar results. Stick the knife in something, and twist it (not uncommon when removing it) and the lock tang interface is now compromised. The next use of the blade (unless the lock is reseated) will result in a failure that result in hospitalization and months of rehab. Oh which will cost you about $3000 to $5000 in medical bills...

Bitter? Yea...

Get an Axis lock, heck get a Compression Lock, Ball Lock, a Back Lock, a Frame Lock...

Folks who say the Axis lock fails have been proven to be frauds and idiots looking for attention. Yes a spring can break, but the lock functions.

Any knife lock can fail, but the Axis has proven to be reliable in all phases of knife use and deployment. Trusting a liner lock is like defending your home with a cap and ball revolver.
