I'm just curious on others thoughts. I have been buying lots of bm knives lately. Two gold class, a triage, a torrent, and a mini grip. All were brand new, but the triage was the only one to come really really sharp. A couple of the new bms were plain disappointing with regard to edge. I decided to buy a spyderco a few days ago, and omg that knife is sharp. Just curious to know if others have experienced this lack of really sharp edge on new knives.

I was somewhat disappointed at first, but then I looked at it from a different angle. No blade will stay sharp forever. Eventually you'll need to sharpen 'em yourself and rarely will a factory edge match the one you'll be able to put on your knife with some practice and right tools, of course. ____________________________ Knock, knock. Bvonh55, I agree with you. The only thing I dislike about Benchmade is that they don't often put a sharp edge on the knives from the factory.. to the point that they could be forgiven for removing the "Extremely sharp" warning off the box most of the time. -----=====-----=====-----=====----- KnifeRights Member

That 'Arachnid' company has some fine edges, among the sharpest is the Lum Chinese IMO. Why Benchmade's come out of box less-than is a mystery, that didn't used to be the case. The ones that come back so flawless from LifeSharp must be from a different group, and consistently superb. Never was there a better case for a good sharpening system like the Edge Pro. Once mastered a less-than edge becomes a moot point. 350, 520, 525BK-1101, 530, 580-1102, 580 Proto, 583-1, 585-1, 710-1, 710-2, 710D2, 710HS, 722, 732, 740, 740 Proto, 741, 745, 746, 746-1201, 750, 790, 800, 800HS, 805-1101, 810, 812, 830, 831, 835HS, 840, 845, 890, 905, 907D2, 910, 910SCG, 912D2, 913D2, 12400 Proto, 12410, 14205, 14210, 40022-100. I'm glad I'm not the only to notice. You guys make good points (lol, you're all "sharp" guys). One you use it on some tape at work, that crazy edge is gone. I need to stop buying knives and find me a nice sharpening system.

If I'm being honest, I think it's one of the stupidest things I hear people talk about. It's on Youtube videos all the time. It makes about as much sense as testing the sharpness of a pencil out of the package. If you use the knife that edge won't last long. If you don't use the knife that sharp edge isn't doing anything for you. And on top of all that, now that I have gotten good at sharpening I have never got a factory edge that I was happy with. Even from Spyderco. I can get my knives sharper than any factory can, so I really couldn't care less how sharp it is out of the box because I'm going to touch up that edge anyway. _____________________________________________________ 201-91, 551H2O, 610BK, 705BC1CF Forum, 705, 10115

BM's edges are hit or miss; that is, sometimes they are screaming sharp and sometimes they leave something to be desired, IMO. The fact that I use my knives and know how to sharpen them is irrelevant. Can I put a wicked edge on a blade? You're damn right I can. But if I spend $100 to $150 or more on a knife, I expect the thing to be sharp out of the box. If the knife isn't sharp, then I figure either somebody doesn't take pride in their work or quality control is asleep--and maybe both. Here's another way of looking at it: I know how to wash a car too. But that doesn't mean I want to drive a dirty one off the new car lot. I expect the dealer to have a car washed while I'm filling out the paperwork. I guess I'm just unreasonable that way. Nevertheless, this doesn't stop me from buying BMs, and btw, they are still my favorite knives too.
