If you are not making sharp knives then you are making excuses.

We're not talking about after use and down the road stuff we're talking out of the box.
In my opinion if you are defending a knife that comes less than wicked sharp out of the box that costs as much as a BM then you are an apologist.

There are a lot of great reasons to like BM. I know a lot of them myself I'm a big fan, but I refuse to apologize for them coming up short in this respect.
It is a way too common criticism against BM knives. I've read about this a lot on this forum.
The warning on the box is not warranted.

This is an area where BM comes up short and QC is lacking. If you make knives send them out sharp.
Otherwise the "It's not just a knife it's a BM" moto doesn't hold the same clout.
It means "we make really good knives and send them out less sharp than what they can be, this is an area where we are willing to settle for second best".

Guys like Spyderco and even Cold Steel are doing it better.
An excuse is not the same as a reason and there is no reason, but I'm reading a lot of excuses.

A knife is meant to be sharp and cut, that is the entire purpose. Why on earth would you send it out performing at less than 100%?

This. If it weren't for the high quality of the rest of the knife, benchmade would have lost me as a customer a while ago with all the butterknives they've sold me. Not a single one benchmade I've ever bought has been as sharp out of the box as a Kershaw or my LUDT (Microtech has been slipping too though, my new ultratech came dull). I find it inexcusable that the bin full of $5 knives at the NAPA auto parts counter all have sharper edges than my 425BK-600 when I bought it. At least check the edge quality on a limited edition... I'd be furious if I paid $1000 for a gold class and it couldn't cut paper. For that money, forget paper, I expect to be able to filet arm hair. I HAVE an edge pro, but that doesn't mean I should have to use it on a brand new premium knife.

Benchmade is still my favorite brand, but they're messing this up bad, and I refuse to make excuses for them. They already have a well deserved butterknife reputation on other forums, how significantly has that impacted their market share?

I am with Sabu71, except for one that the blade was so off center, (I returned it for a full refund)
I've had no issues and all were scary sharp.

@laser- Would you be so kind in PM'ing me the email address you sent to, and your email address sent from? I want to do some investigating to see if maybe our spam filter is catching some emails, or what else could be happening in some cases.

Thanks Smiler

I am glad to see this topic and see Benchmade repond to it. My only complaint has been the dullness of many of BM knives in the last few years. I have a 707 I bought about 4 years ago in 154CM and it came sharp and has held an edge very well over the years with touch up now and then. On the other hand I have bought a Mini Grip, 530 and a 940 that had to go tright to my Norton India combo stone as these knives were butter dull. My 746 needs to be sharpened and I have 470 Emmissary on it's way to me and hope it is sharp. I cannot fault BM on the quality but the sharpness must get better. BTW, I bought my first BM folder back in the late eighties thinl it was the Monarck with an opening disc on top of the blade which I really like.
