Am I right in assuming that the handles would have to be perfectly flat? No grooves or bumps or anything?

We can engrave on metal handles only. They can have bumps and grooves as the laser flows over them well. We have done many black anodized, machined 6061 T-6 aluminum handles with military logos on the grip and they come out very sharp and bright. If your unsure whether we can mark a knife feel free to ask me and I will let you know.

Two things:

First, Welcome Ryan! Always good to have another official voice, even if you may not say a whole lot.

Second, do you run into DOF (Depth Of Field) issues with the bumps & grooves? I'd imagine there's only so much maximum difference you can handle before you can't keep the laser properly focused.

@KCSteve: Thanks, glad to be here. As for depth of field, most of the knives are relatively flat so there isn't much to worry about. As for the handles the laser moves well over the grooves and from what I have done there has been no issues at all. Even the more aggressive grooves like the 5300 work well for handle marks.

Thanks for the update!

Knowing this will make it easier for folks to plan possible markings.

I remember at the 2007 NRA Annual Meeting the laser they had with them there had issues with getting the focus just right. But it's a tech thing and for modern tech three years is a long time.
