I am a extremely close to borrowing $30 from a friend and buying this http://www.knifeworks.com/Benc...itedto250Knifew.aspx However for me 174$ is a LOT of money and although benchmade says excellent corrosion resistances I HATE HATE HATE! rust while I do know how to take care of my knives It is fairly humid here and carbon steels will corrode in drawers.. Is M390 steel as rust resistant as VG-10 or CM-154? finally if it is already sharp can the edge be maintained with a fine sharpmaker rod?

M390 is highly corrosion resistant. i have put mine away wet, with acidic juices on it with no problems at all. you could maintain it with a fine rod but i prefer the edge i get from the medium rods. personal preference

If I recall correctly, 20% chromium in M390- that's as high as it gets. The only other 20% I can think of is zdp-189, and I've never heard of rust issues w/ that. zdp tho has more carbon than M390- carbon ties up some chromium, making it unavailable for rust-resistance chores, so I would think M390 should be even better. Yet another reason to want a new 805!!

Looks like I found my knife I wanted the 710 but in 154CM so it wouldn't rust in my pocket or from cutting fruit like D2 might and its starting to seem like M390 might compare to VG-10. but with a better wear and edge.

I have still been testing M390 with my daily use of the new 710. I don't have any rust issues here, even with carbon steels, so that's not really part of my evaluation. I have noticed though from sharpening the blade at two different pitches how it takes an edge. It will sharpen to a keen edge that seems to last. I have noticed that it is very hard. While sharpening it on an EdgePro, care must be taken to eliminate any grind marks before moving to the next smoother stone because the blade is so hard that a strop doesn't remove the grind marks like it would on most other steels. In that respect, M390 seems similar to S90V. It is a little tough to sharpen...which reminds me of D2, but if you take your time it will come to a great edge.

Not a lot out there yet on M390, but it's been suggested by some that it's a bit tougher than a lot of stainlesses- THAT, to me anyway, would be a BIG plus if so-

My M390 710-1 is currently my work EDC. I'm a firefighter and the knife in my belt pouch on my uniform belt is prone to getting wet and sweaty.
I have had no issues so far with the M390 showing any corrosion.
So far I have found the steel to be excellent.

We have all been there.
The 1st $100.00 folder....... Its a huge deal for most of us.
Then $200.00
$300.00 was a tough jump for me....
And so on.

Then when you actually use 'em for every day stuff. Thats a real milestone.

Congrats on getting a great knife!
You will find Roger a great guy to buy from as well.
And so it begins! Big Grin

S90v Please......
