I think one of these is going to be my next BM purchase... Which one should I get? I haven't handled either as there are no B&M's anywhere near me to do so.. I'm just going to be using it for edc.

I like the g-10 handles on the 890 better, but I like the tip-up carry and axis lock on the 580...

So what do you guys think? By the way the Barrage will probably be a 580S if that matters Wink

I've handled both. The 890 does feel like and look like a nicer, almost gentlemen's, carry. However, the 580 has the Axis lock, which is hard to beat. To me, a big factor would be the look and feel that you prefer. I would probably go with the 580 because I'm an Axis fanatic.

I would go with the 580 due to the fact that it has the Axis Lock but this is my personnel taste.

The 890 is slower to deploy, which may or may not matter to you. I like the look and finish and feel of the 890 better. I am huge fan of the standard axis lock because it is not only fast to open but fast to close. With the assisted axis though you loose this quick close attribute, so to me leaving the assisted axis to go to a nitrous is a relatively small sacrifice.

Thanks... If I'm going to bother with an assisted opener I definately want something thats going to deploy quick.. and I love the Axis lock, obviously... I'll probably end up with both sooner or later Big Grin but I think I'll start with the 580(S) first, if Roger ever gets them in stock!

Picking up on this posting I just received my new 580 in trade from Butterfingers and am impressed with the details and how fast it deploys, that's quite a SNAP!

I like both knives, got an 890 last week and appreciate each in their own right.

The 890 definitely has a softer opening, yet is right there at the same time - I think I like the blade shape a little better than that on the 580 but not by much.

Now comparing the 580 to the 585...I like the 585 as previously said - it's become one of my favorite EDC knives. It does not have the SNAP/recoil the 580 has but it's smaller size is really easy to carry.

One thing I've noticed right off, on the 580 the clip screw inserts are brass unlike that on the 585. Either Benchmade listened to our complaints or decided to make the change all on their own, but it's a very good idea and I welcome it.

Thanks Joe. I went with the 580S first, got it in a few weeks ago and I've been carrying it ever since... I love it! Haven't had a single problem with it yet.. You're right, it snaps open very hard... At first, I thought it was only a matter of time before something breaks, but it seems to be holding up fine.

I think BM listened to some of the complaints when making this knife... The screw inserts like you said, also the pocket clip is much preferred compared to the typical painted one.. Its a great EDC knife Blue Class.
