I used this foam-backed pad wetted with Militec-1 oil. The pad is not at all aggresively abrasive and I was surprised that it took the coating off so easily. I see it as a blessing in disguise. I now have the uncoated blade that I wanted on the 710-801 Smiler

That is a sanding block, and we are talking about a coating that is at most several .001's of inch thick.

I guess I have a hard time thinking it wasn't applied right when it goes up against an abrasive pad like that. Were you trying to polish it or clean it or something?

My 710-801 has help up great to 8 months of solid use, the coating is certainly wearing but not past what I think is normal.

FWIW, I do think the satin blade looks SWEET!

You would have to feel the pad to appreciate how fine it is. It almost completely worn out.

Rust was forming through the coating, so I gave it a gentle rub with the pad wet with oil to remove it. In the area where the rust was showing through the coating there were the early signs of pitting on the blade.

I have removed coatings from numerous Benchmade pocket clips, a Fallkniven White Whale and a BM Nim Cub 145BT. Those coatings were much, much more adherent than the 710-801's.

Are you using it around salt water? That is kinda wild it already showed signs of rust and corrosion. Perhaps you got a bum knife, I think what you have done with it looks AWESOME! Let us know how it holds up.

It sounds like the coating was flawed but it sure worked out, I love the result, it's much better looking.

I live on a coastal island and the air is a little salty, but I don't think that was a contributing factor.
I had been using the knife to cut foliage out on a walk and had not cleaned the blade properly before I put the knife away. I think that some of the sap from the plants may have been corrosive.

I do prefer the uncoated blade and will let you know how it holds up.

I think it looks great with the coating removed! Good to know for the future, if/when the coating goes, this looks like a great option. Kinda cool the way all the markings are still visible, only very subdued.
