End of the story:

Andy at BM warranty service never sent me the return shipping label he promised.

I kept the Monochrome and adjusted the pivot and lubed it.

It is now useable -- but closing it still risks a broken thumb nail and is a two-handed affair.

The Monochrome undoubtedly is a lot for the money but I won't be getting another, in either steel.
