I really like the triangle shaped rods. The stand it pretty useless if you know how to sharpen a blade. But buy it anyway, just to get the rods.

It's good for keeping an edge sharp, but its a chore to re profile with. Get one, you will like it.

+1. It's awesome for touchups. Sometimes I just lay the stick down and use it like an oil stone.

Sharpmaker 204 was my first real angle guided system and like Po sez, the stones are worth the ticket. From a year's worth of use the mounting holes on the plastic box are sloppy, but for touchups works very well.

Even though I've got the EP Apex 4 I'm gonna keep the 'SM' as a backup, although the ceramic rod on the EP4 does a great job, having good tools and backups for them is a good thing.

It sharpens quickly and without any effort or knowledge.

I like mine a lot. My 710d2 shipped from the factory rather dull, and a few minutes on the sharpmaker made it razor sharp.

My first two BM's, a 211 & 551, were delivered dull. I had a drawer literally full of dull pocket knives. As a woodcarver/turner for many years, I had a collection of AR stones, Japaneese waterstones, and diamond dust files. I could re-edge a single bevel to hair splitting sharpness - but I was unable to put an even double edge back to service. The Sharpmaker cured that - and it comes with a manual and DVD that really help. Get some Bon Amis to clean the rods often - that metal impedes the cutting. Re-edging can be a career with 440C/D2/S30V - touching up edge sharpness can take as little as 10-20 swipes on those edges, however. It really averages out any wrong angle (hand) by doing one side then the other, repeat. Of course, with BM, it's a crapshoot as to the original bevel angle. Bargain tool!

I like mine. Getting the extra rods (diamond and ultra fine) make it even better

It's ok, if you're lucky and the factory edge on your knife matches one of their presets. Or if you don't mind freehanding it.

My Sharpmaker hasn't left the case since I got the Edge Pro however.
