Hi everyone,
New to the forum, but have a question about D2 steel for hard outdoor use. I like to go camping and I heard that D2 steel is to brittle for hard camping chores. What do you guys think about D2 for hard outdoor duties?

im more curious what knife in D2 you plan to use, 710? that said i prefer 154CM or 440C fixed blades for ourdoor use, never used a D2 "hard" yet. sorry if that answers none of your questions, welcome to the forums.

Hi Stryker,
Got a 710 for a gift and just wanted some feedback on this knife for hard use.

I completely disagree. with maybe a few caveats.

d2 is a bigger pain to sharpen.
d2 is not as corrosion resistant.
d2 may be a bit more brittle than other steels.

1. you shouldn't have to mistreat your knife during a camping trip, thus eliminating my 3 caveats.

for any normal knife duty, that is to say cutting, it's a great steel.

for knife abuse(s) I'd say use a cheaper knife that's easier to resharpen.

Side note: I'm a huge believer in the right tool for the right job, and for normal camping activities you should have what you need with you. Again D2 is a bigger pain to sharpen than most other steels.

and josh snipes my post :P

yep, "softer" steels beat out the speciality steels for hard use and potential abuse.

If I were a camper I can tell you in addition to a pocket knife I would take a fixed blade along for the heavy chores.

I camp ALOT and have never had a problem with D2. However, like Skimo, I don't abuse a so-called "pocket knife". For really hard use that borders on abuse, I use an old Camillus fixed blade. I also usually have a hatchet along too.

Don't know if that's of any help for you....

Welcome to the Forum usmc87.

I have never had a problem with any BM D2 although it is classified as a non-stainless steel. My new purchase is a Spydie para millie with D2 and trying it out to see how it holds up to the BM D2.

On all my non-stainless blades I coat it with Rain-X to prevent water from staying on the blade but the best thing is to always wipe it down after use.

You will be fine with D2. Just make sure you wipe off the blade after you use it. Don’t let any kind of moisture sit on the blade after you used it. Just wipe the blade across your sleeve or something.
If you can, take a fixed blade with you as well. Or a hatchet,

Welcome to the forum.
