Guys, this may have been discussed on here many times,or most of you may know the ansewer, but I am kinda new, so I need to ask. I am sharpening mu new 930 Kulgera, and I was wondering what the correct angle to sharpen my blade. I have used a Spyderco Sharpmaker in the past on other knives, and have used the 40degree setting, the sharpmaker also has a 30 degree setting but they say most blades can not hold that edge. Can you tell me what is the best angle you would use. Thanks

Use the 30. Premium steel blades that aren't going to be use to chop stuff can handle it quite well.

Raycat, probably the ideal angle would be 35 degrees. Unfortunately, as you know with the Sharpmaker, your only choices are 30 & 40. To make a long story longer, I bored a couple of holes in a 2"x4" using a drill press using a 1/2" bit. The holes allowed me to stuff my Sharpmaker stones in at 35 degrees. Space the holes about 1.5" apart so you don't end up boring one hole into the other (down in the wood).
Short of doing that, I would first try 30 degrees and if the edge chips, do an secondary micro edge of 40 degrees. This will cut better than a straight 40 degrees because you have the nice 30 degree back-bevel making the blade a little slimmer. I have a 943 with S30V steel. I sharpened it at 30 degrees and it won't hold up that steep. It chips. I'll probably back it off to 35 degrees next time. Until then, I'll just give it a little micro edge using crock stix. Other steels like 154CM and D2 can probably hold the 30 degrees. Sometime S30V will...sometimes it won't. It is a better steel "on paper" than in the real world.
