I reprofiled my M390 710 to 10 degrees per side with a micro edge of 15 degrees per side. I took it out and cut up a bunch of cardboard boxes today and it did great.

I'm not a big fan of shaving my arm hair to test sharpness, but in this case I tried it after the cardboard and it shaved like a barber's straight-edge. I'm pleased with it.

How has M390 worked for you?

I have a 581BK with M390 and love how it holds an edge. Other than the coating scratching the first time I used it, I am very impressed with the Benchmade M390 and the features of the 581BK Barrage axis assist.

I use my 580-1102 and 710-1 around the kitchen, for packages and anything else I can find, and M390 is great stuff. So far no resharpening needed, stropping on my horsehide strap puts that edge right back after a few passes.

M390 is my favorite steel by a pretty wide margin. It's rust resistance and ability to take an edge are uncanny. Seems to hold for a while too, I haven't had to sharpen my 806-1101 yet.

I put a 17* edge with a 20* back bevel on mine and it has been a light saber for about a month of use now. I have only used a smooth steel to keep the edge straight every morning after I use it. Great Steel!

Does anyone use a strop to tune up the M390?
I have been using a leather strop charged with 1 micron diamond paste with good results.

Also, I plan to reprofile to 15 degrees with my Gatco diamond system. The factory edge looks to be somewhere between 20 and 25 degrees. Does anyone know what angle Benchmade puts on the 581BK Barrage. Is it difficult to reprofile the M390. I did reprofile an S30V blade with little trouble.

I use a strop with green polishing rouge, and it keeps my M390 blades nice and sharp. On the angle thing, Benchmade does the edges by hand, so it could be anyhwere from 18 to 30 inclusive. M390 reads like it's pretty tough. I have not reprofiled anything in it yet, but have done S30V on my Edge Pro and it's got to be easier for sure.
