I have been using a leather strop charged with 1 micron diamond paste with good results.

Also, I plan to reprofile to 15 degrees with my Gatco diamond system. The factory edge looks to be somewhere between 20 and 25 degrees. Does anyone know what angle Benchmade puts on the 581BK Barrage. Is it difficult to reprofile the M390. I did reprofile an S30V blade with little trouble.

Using diamonds will make it as easy as any other steel. The amount of steel you have to remove will count way more than the type of steel. I reprofiled my TSEK & my buddy's Barrage in M390 with no problems. It takes a fine, yet "aggressive" edge with little effort. I love this stuff. Definitely my favorite steel. Well worth the money if you like high quality, long lasting edges.

performing pretty well.
very happy with it.
still love me some M4 but the stain resistance
and such are what really put this over the top.

Just last night I stropped my M390 710 and an M4 710 and did a paper test. Both would easily push cut clear through a sheet of copy paper. I'm sure there are tougher tests, but that's been my benchmark for years. Both went through totally smooth. I'd still pay more for M4, but with M390 I have no complaints. M2, M4 and M390 seem significantly better than the "also rans". Smiler

Is the edge similar to M4, or more like D2?

I finally got an evening to devote to the 581BK/M390. I reprofiled the edge to 15 deg. with the Gatco hones listed below. Took a lot longer than I expected to rise a burr but the results are amazing. The entire process took about 2.5 hours. The new edge is shaving sharp; well worth the time.

1. Gatco Course diamond hone (new).
2. Gatco Medium diamond hone.
3. Gatco Fine diamond hone.
4. Gatco Extra Fine stone.
5. Leather strop/1 micron diamond paste.
