So I just whipped out the new edge pro and decided to break it in with a mini-dejavoo. I decided on 21 degrees, and since it's a flat grind I bumped the angle up to about 22.5 to compensate. I'm hacking away at it, and all seems well, except for the last 1/4 inch of the tip. It just isn't even close to coming to the edge, and it seems like if I keep going long enough for it to I'll have a huge bevel at the tip. I think I'm rotating the knife enough to get the stone cutting at the tip at a right angle, I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. This blade came with a wicked steep angle too, more than any of my other BMs, like amost 40 per side it seems. Help? Should I just keep hacking away at the tip?

Actually, now that I got a closer look, it seems that a contributing factor is that my tip is slightly off center.

You're a brave man to jump right in on the 745. Sometimes it's better to practice on something older and not Benchmade first, as some of us do.

I'm discovering it's best to have the edge perpenducular to the stone all the way across and go ligtly towards the tip end of things.

I was right with you Joe until this bit... Confused

something older and not Benchmade first, Frowner

you mean like a butter knife,it's the only not benchmade, I can find, other than Dads old knife.

so I started on my EDC(745-81) before I started Gold Plating the blade.

I just took my time and it all worked out fine...

Well, done-ish. The first time through, I checked my sharpness along the way, but stopped checking after 600, and it would shave then. Somewhere between the 600 and polishing tapes I lost my shaving ability completely, so I went all the way back down to 320 and back up to 1000. It's a hair popper again. It really doesn't seem to be any sharper than my 425-600 that I did with my Lansky system, but no duller either. I didn't really get the hang of not rocking the blade until the second time around. I also noticed that I had trouble being consistent with the angle, the grind wasn't fluid and you could see where I repositioned the blade. The second time around I just left the blade centered and it worked out better. I also have some scratches where I didn't spend enough time with the lower grits, so I'm probably going to start all over in a few days anyway. All in all, definitely not perfect, but not bad for the first try. I think I'll do a short wharncliffe next though lol.

That's the one big trick in using the EdgePro (and why you want to practice on a couple of don't care knives) - keeping the edge of the blade properly in position in reference to the edge of the table.

It's usually pretty easy moving across the blade but when you get to the tip (or any other curve) you have to swing the knife to get the part you're working on to the right spot. For me the key is to set the guide using the widest part of the blade and then swing it in / out while always keeping in contact with the guide.

You can always give EDGEPRO a call they can give you a few tips. They where helpful when I first recieved mine.

Tip 1 Put Blue tape on the knife blade to avoid Scratches.

Tip 2 if you have several knives that you sharpen start a journal/log of when you sharpen the knife and the angel and so forth.

tip 3 Smaller knives do not need to be pulled across the blade table. Try and set it in a position that allows you to sharpen the whole blade with out moving it.
