I'm thinking of going through my knives again and putting something on them for long term storage. Is Sentry Solutions Tuff-Glide or Tuff-Cloth good for that?

I read some threads here that gave it mixed reviews for an everyday use lube because of the visible waxy coating it leaves, but this doesn't seem like such a bad thing when it comes to heavy duty protection. That said, if another product could protect as well with an invisible coat, I might go for that instead.

So when it comes to protecting metal from corrosion during long term storage, what do you use? Thanks!

Mineral Oil doesn't break down nor go rancid.

(if you have trouble finding mineral oil, go to the laxative section of your Rx Eeker , or check out the ingredient list on J&J Baby Oil, if you don't mind the scent Roll Eyes)

Enjoy.

Thanks for the ideas, guys. I actually use mineral oil as an everyday lube cause it's nontoxic, so I can use my knife on food. I guess I could use it in preparation for long-term storage too, but I was wondering if there's something better.

Tuff-glide dries up pretty well, which makes it appealing. Mineral oil tends to spread around and get everything oily, especially if you put a thick coat on for better long-term protection.

I was just wondering if anything at all is needed for long-term storage? I keep mine in their boxes and it's pretty dry where I live.

Since everything (or anything) we'd put on the blades or in the pivot would dry and leave a film of some kind I'd think about just leaving them as is.

Well, as a choice for D2 and tool steel blades in general, I'd go for the Tuf-cloth IF there was a concern.

I live in the mountain desert of NM so there's unlikely to be a problem, but it would suck to notice down the road that there was some damage when it could have been easily avoided. Most of these knives are NIB and I'd expect the factory oil to be enough for the pivots. I'd just wipe down the blades with whatever to make sure they're safe.

I'm probably somewhere between applying appropriate prevention measures and overreacting to a non-problem. =)

If you live next to the ocean, and are gonna store 'em a long time, dip 'em in a beaker of mineral oil or 30W past the pivot.

For my knives that I don't carry I usually just coat the blade in militec or whatever light oil I have around. Every few months I clean and reapply. All and all I think as long as you have anything on them you're good to go. It's not as if they are exposed to the elements, they are just sitting in a box/case/safe and in my case, in their little BM bags.
