440C, 154CM, D2, S30V, M2, CPM-M4. G10, Carbon Fiber, Rosewood. I wanted it all. I have it all. Now I don't care.

I have lost my interest in knives. Oh, I still like them, make no mistake, but they just don't get my juices flowing. Maybe my enthusiasm will return? Will it be months, years, never?

I look at my dresser, and there are about 30 Benchmades with a smattering of other makes laying there. What do they represent? An empty search for some Holy Grail? A wise investment? A spoiled child in a man's body?

When new friends come to my house they think it looks crazy. I don't give a damn. If you don't like them find another friend. But then I wonder, is it crazy?

Your thoughts?

try something else, sometimes collecting stuff gets monotnous and you need a change. i rotate between guns, knives and just got into flashlights but not really crazy. i usually switch between guns and knives, right now im on the knives. maybee a month or two it'll be guns again.

You weren't real clear as to the other makers. If you mean like Spyderco, or Emerson or other tactical locking folders, maybe you should buy a few traditional knives.
These are the last three I bought

From Bottom to top
Case Sway Back Chestnut Bone CV, about $60
Queen Mini Trapper D2 Steel 3.5" closed, about $50
Great Eastern Cutlery Stag Cuban 3-blade Stockman about $150

You buy a few of these, they slip right in your pocket, cut like a devil, and you can take them to church or to work (I can anyway) without freaking out the sheeple. After a while in the slow lane you will be ready to re-discover some Benchmades.
Works for me anyway Big Grin.

James,

It sounds like it's time for a break. You've come to the point many of us get to when you collect something intensely.

I know I'm not going to own every Benchmade ever made, I don't have the money, time, or intent to go that far.

Knives, esp. the Benchmades you probably own, won't lose their value. Before you make any decisions just clear 'em off the dresser, put 'em away, and come back in a few days to see what you really want to do, if there's something else coming maybe you'll be able to see it better!

Joe

I thought that I had a lot of knives when I had 7 BMs and began to question why I needed so many because I only carried one. Now the number has grown a little about 10. The difference now is that I rotate and am trying to carry all of the BMs that I own. I never intended on selling any of my knives and I never intended on trading them, so what was the point of me owning so many knives? Each knife has something different that I like about it.

There are times that I wonder if I did it all over again, would I buy all the knives that I had. My answer is probably not. I probably would only buy a 520SBK, 950SBK-1, 525S, 556S, and 707S. That's less than half of what I own now, but I probably wouldn't have been able to make that decision if I hadn't owned the other BMs. However, I have the all the other BMs now, so I can use them, sell them, or do whatever I want with them. For now, I choose to use them and enjoy my collection. Smiler

Oh and +1 on what Joe said. Don't make any decisions that you might regret later. If you wait, your collection may only grow in value.

I think part of it has to do with the "time" we live in. We are changing, the reality is, no matter what happens on Wall Street, most families are looking at 5 years before they are "out" of the economic times we are in.

Having large amounts of anything is starting to get distasteful. Consumerism is out.

And, knives are meant to be used... I like knives because of an interest in the martial aspect of them. I will spend 4 hours with a group training on the combative use of the blade this weekend (we do this monthly), along with my own training. So in other words, it is not about collecting for me.

My son likes knives too, it is something we share. I look at them as things I will pass to him. Pieces of his father that will have meaning to him.

I find collecting for the sake of collecting to be really boring.

You like knives, and you always will. Sell off some of your knives. You will find out which ones really meant something. Carry one knife for a few months, go on some adventures, live life... And that piece of steel will be a memory.

James, when I get bogged down with too many knives it is time for me to sell off 20 or so just to clear my mind. I start with the ones I know I haven't touched in months. Lots of us do this.
