I have searched the forum and havn't really seen this issue discussed. Due to the fact that proto's are usually the first 50 or so produced, have there been any cases of malfunctions/mechancial issues with proto knives...more so than with standard production.

I am thinking of picking up a proto but am unsure if I want to risk a faulty knife...as I am planning to carry and use it.

I guess it could go the other way aswell and the quality could be better since each one is looked over very closley. I did stumble across many fourmites saying they hold their value well, leading me to believe there are no problems with the knives at all.

Anyway any information you can lend would be much appreciated.

Trevor

I would assume the risk would be the same as that of a First Production run... They both are known to sometimes (perhaps rarely) have small faults or flaws that are later worked out in the normal production run.

If you're planning on using your prototype, though, I don't think it will be "holding its value" as you say... I mean, once you use it, its pretty much a user and considered at face value..

Oh, I didnt mean to imply that I thought it was going to hold its value after it was used. I just read many fourmites say they hold their value better than pre-pro/1st production runs. Which lead me to infer that quality concerns might not be an issue, or else they would have commanded a lower price.

I would say that the proto's are better quality sometimes cause the tooling is fresh.

Exactly.

I have or had probably 100 prototypes and i would prefer a proto to a normal production version. The G-10 especially seems to be much grippier on the protos.
