So, I have yet to buy my first BM, and I really want the 950; it's one of the most attractive knives I've ever laid eyes on, but since money's a little tight around here, it'll most likely be a Grip instead. What do you guys think, buy the Grip (I can get one NIB for $75 shipped) or save up a while and get the 950? I know I'll ultimately be happier with the Rift, but my desire for instant gratification makes me want to just go for the Grip and hope the wife buys me the Rift as an anniversary gift... Opinions?

I would say save and get the Rift cause you said it yourself that you'd be happier. If you look real hard or even in the for sale section here they can be had for around $100-$120. That really isn't too much more for alot more happiness is it? Then you could ask your wife for the Grip as a anniversary gift or even a 710 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lunatics I salute thee!! http://i248.photobucket.com/al.../M2HSSR/bdd5b559.jpg Boomerangs 'n Butterflies: An Osborne Alliance | Member #22

It really doesnt matter grip, rift, opportunist or barrage, once you get one your gonna get um all. You should however look at the barrage 585 its a great new piece thats about $80.00, assisted axis lock and a step up from the gripitilian line. 32BK, 2550, 3550, 9051, 425SBK, 440, 525BK, 527, 550SBKOD, 553BKHG, 556SBK, 556YEL, 555SHG-BLU, 558BT-600, 585, 615-2, 635, 707S, 710D2, 710-801, 730BT, 745, 745SBK, 812, 813, 830SBT, 831S, 890, 890BK, 906SBKD2, 913D2, 923-01, 930S, 940BK, 950-1, 950SBK, 960-SLV, 960-RED, 10410, 10750SBP, 10751BP, 14205, 14210, 14440SB, 16707BT, 12800BK-801

I just checked out the barrage and the mini, and I have to say, good looking knives! 2.9" is a little small on the blade size, though. My Vapor (cheap Kershaw, I know...I hadn't learned yet, and didn't k ow any better) is a 3" blade and I was looking for something a little bigger for heavy duty cutting. I should say, however, cheap as it is, my Keeshaw has served me well for a sub-$20 blade. It doesn't hold a stupid sharp edge for long, but it's fairly sturdy with minimal play (after a little tweaking) and if I lost it at work, I wouldn't be devastated. Especially considering it retails for 3X what I paid for it if you check the Kershaw site (which is crazy if you ask me). I held a combo edge Griptilian on Saturday, and its action was SO smooth even right out of the box! I couldn't believe the difference between it and my cheapie. If y'all couldn't tell, I'm just starting to get into knives, and I'm totally in love with the BM line. The black series especially, since I'm military and have the opportunity to pick up a few of the restricted designs. Hopefully this is a hobby I can really take off with. Y'all are such a cool community, and I could do way worse than to choose a group to associate with like yours.

Get what you can afford. I'd recommend a 551 Grip in either plain or partially serrated blade since you've tried one of them. That would be a great start. You'll quickly discover you can't "eat just one", and so get the 950 when you can! 350, 520, 525, 525BK-1101, 530, 580-1102, 580 Proto, 583-1, 585-1, 710-1, 710-2, 710D2, 710HS, 722, 732, 740, 740 Proto, 741, 745, 746, 746-1201, 750, 790, 800, 800HS, 805-1101, 812, 830, 831, 835HS, 840, 845, 890, 905, 907D2, 910, 910SCG, 912D2, 913D2, 12400 Proto, 12410, 14205, 14210, 40022-100. I agree with Joe. Eventually, you'll have both, you might as well start with the grip. Welcome to the forum! -fj ********************** ********************** You are the Sum of Your Actions. Knife Rights Member

The difference in price between a new Griptilian and the Rift is not that great ($45-$50). I would just save up and get it, since you really want it more. ----------------- Current President Brotherhood of the 420 & Viceroy of the Knights of the Gravitator. SPTA Founding Member. First, welcome to the forum. If you can pounce on DJ's Rift. Or save up until you can. I don't think you would be disappointed in the Grip if you did get that one though. This message has been edited.
