The gray/black looks better to me than plain black. Especially when it's paired with a coated blade.

To each his own I suppose...

The only reason I don't care for the charcoal color schemed handles is because I feel like I need to be wearing urban camo pants to match the knife .

That's more my problem though, but if BM had chosen another color or material for the handle in the same price bracket, I might have pursued a different avenue. But between the 2 alternatives for me, I still choose the straight black. I'm not trying to grab any unwanted attention while carrying...

With orange colored griptilians and every other rainbow colored (very expensive) aftermarket scales including ones that glow in the dark,
I would say that gray/black cammo scales are rather subdued.
The Rift is an excellent knife, one of my favourites, you can't go wrong with either choice.

I'd never thought of this, but I have to agree. Maybe the black on black 950-1 handle would do better against a satin PE.
