Just getting started buying Benchmade. Should have started long ago. Just got both a Blackwater/Benchmade 16707BT and a 557BT-400 limited edition. Very impressed with both. Both feel great in my small hands and should make great EDC knives. I am very partial to tanto blades, so I will probably carry the 557 most. They are very smooth and very sharp, right out of the box. I have carried several assisted openers lately, and have found that I can flip either of these Benchmades open about as fast any of my assisted knives. My assisted collection includes two Timberline Discovery, Buck Rush & Tempest, Gerber Fastdraw, CRKT Kommer Full Throttle, etc. My personal favorite is the Timberline Discovery, but they are now somewhat collectible and I hesitate to use them much. I usually carry the CRKT.

How durable is the black coating used on these two Benchmades? Should I be concerned with any future collectibility or just go ahead and carry these? They will be carried a lot, used a little. This could become somewhat addictive! Thanks in advance.

Carry the heck out of them. The Mini-grip is a good of user as there ever will be. If you want to collect tanto's from Benchmade look for a model 722 pardue, 910 stryker, and 970\975 emerson. Those are more of your collector blades. They are disco'd but can be found at the "big auction site" reasonably priced.

By the way welcome to the forum.

Welcome Hooked!

The BT coating looks good new, looks better with wear since a knife is meant to be used. You will notice the coating wearing on the high points of the blade first and then gradually wearing off of the rest of the blade. It's all good though. The coating penetrates the steel on a molecular level so it still protects against rust even when it is worn away.

I liked Tanto blades for a while and have a 722BT. I have used it so much all of the coating has worn off of the blade except from the thumb studs to the handle. I'll post some pics soon of my well worn blade. The 72X series was a great size and IMVHO should not have been DCd. Frowner

Welcome to the forum IMH.

I also have a Timberline Discovery and I didn't realize that it is a collectible.

I rarely use it because I found other AO to be smoother opening.
