Only had the 581BK for two days and I am sporting a large bandage on my right index finger. This is my first assisted opener and I learned the hard way how quickly it closes. I have collected Case pocket knives for years without incident. Am I the only one who had to learn a new respect for the spring assist?

The only two times I've cut myself with knives was with a Cold Steel Espada XL (7.5 inch blade folding knife), and recently with a chris reeve umnumzaan- trying to learn to open it correctly

Never had an issue with spring assisted openers- generally anything that goes flying out like a spring knife or a firearm gives me a red flag to be extra careful Wink

Hi Jim, welcome. Most of us get bit from time to time...but when closing the 581 it's done two-handed usually. I'm not sure how you got your right Index in the way of the blade, but I'll bet you don't do that again.

I always give a kid 2 band aids when giving them a knife. far as i know, no band aids have gone to waste yet.

Been pissing moms off and cultivating future Marines like that for 10 years running now.

Been bit a bunch. Helped a lot of people get bit too.

Totally par.
