I know by taking apart your Benchmade voids the warranty, but how do they know you've taken it apart, assuming you put it together correclty?

in my experience, they do not go out of their way looking for reasons to give you a hard time--

I do not work for Benchmade, however ...

IMO, what they do not want to see for warranty work is a) a customized knife or b) a bag of parts because someone could not put it back together.

IMO, if you asked anyone who worked for Benchmade, other than corporate counsel, they would say that an owner who can maintain their gear is double plus good.

So only use high quality tools, don't bugger up the screws or threads and don't loose any of the tiny bits. That is my working model.

*edit: And if I break it, I man up and pay the price.

Yes, if it was put together wrong it may void the warranty but BM is pretty good in helping the customer.

I doubt that have a method of determining that. If it's all stock and proper there shouldn't be an issue. I recall Jason from Benchmade saying that they don't actively look for warranty voiders.

I think they charge you for reassembly if you can't get it back together and have to send it to them, but otherwise no biggie. =)

I don't think they even care if it's customized.

But if the problem you are having may have been caused by the customization then you are on your own.

And if you send them a bag of parts, putting it back together is not covered by warranty, they will charge you.

I find this policy very reasonable.

As long as the thing's not butchered, they're easy to work with. I sent up my 710D2 without the BK coating and received compliments on the outcome. Also sent up my 525SBK-701 with a stock 525 satin blade, and again got positive remarks.

Compared to other makers, Benchmade's a great place to deal with when we make one of their knives our own by swapping blades, etc.

Unless you radically change your knife in some way that detracts from its function or reliability, I wouldn't worry about it.
