Has anyone else had a locking lug spring break on a 523? I've owned this knife for 3 months and the spring on one side is already broken. Was wondering if I was the only one?

With a bum knife in Afghanistan,
Tom

Me thinks you are referring to the Omega spring.

I've only ever had one break and it was on a 940. I continued using the knife, with only one spring for like a year with no ill effects. Soooo knife isn't exactly bum. Should hold together fine for you until you make it back stateside.

If you want to chance it, you could try shipping it back to BM to fix while you're there but I suspect just waiting until you are home will be fine.

Welcome to the forums and stay safe. Wink

I have a 520BK that has had springs break on two occasions. The first time was, like you, after only a couple months of use.

As MaxStatic said, the knife should still be usable. I probably wouldn't employ it in any situation where lots of force was being applied to the blade, just in case the other spring broke. But it should be fine for light duty until you have a chance to send it off to Benchmade.

It is usable and kind of nice with the lighter pressure of only one spring. Just kind of surprised it gave out so soon I guess.

I'll limp it along for the rest of the tour - only 10 weeks to go.

Thanks zven. Thanks Max - I happen to be exMil working as an IC now. Was BUD/S class 186 - SpecWar for 9 yrs.

Cheers,
Tom

Omega springs are like electronics. If they break they break early. If they don't break early they don't seem to break at all.

Many times, if you get one broken spring, you get a lot. The problem is not the springs, as it seems there can be some issue with where the spring sits in the liner of the Axis module. If you get repeated failures, have that checked out or replaced.
