Well, On the one hand I'm quite happy with mine. But on the other hand, it's just sitting quietly in the other room, radiating the simple happiness that comes from being ready for mayhem. Steve :-> KnifeRights.org Charter Member #134 - how about you?

Nothing really new to add to my initial report. It is mean, it's massive, it's extremely cool. There is some question about the hardness. You need a trainer, because it destroys any sort of practice target you might have really quickly. 581BK-1102 Hybrid, 585-1BK Mini Barrage, 587SBK-1 Mini Warn, Bradley Alias I LE, 581, 525/Bone Collector, 941BLU, 520BK/Bone Collector, 760Ti Krein Regrind, 583SBK-1 Warn Tanto, HK14210, 707-701, 140HS, 551-101 Gold Grip, 941BC, 950BK M4, 220, 30, 42, 32, 53

I really want one, but I just have to know, is it really worth almost ten times the amount than the SOG tomahawk? I love BM knives, but i just dont know if I could spend over 300 on something that there are DECENT (not equal) alternatives to that are so much cheaper. ~~~~~~~~~~ 551 Griptilian Plain Edge Kershaw Leek Plain Edge Case Trapper Bone Scales Boker Green Bone Congress ...the Rattlesnake is found in no other quarter of the world besides America. As it happens, I'm lucky enough to have both a SOG (the one that has 'SOG' cut through it) and the 172. I'd say the 172 is definitely worth the price difference. They're not really comparable tools. The SOG is nice, quite fun, but it's almost a "Gent's Tomahawk" - kind of the like, oh say the 440 Opportunist, just to choose one of my smaller, lighter Benchmades. Makes you happy to have it and you can do a lot with it. The 172, on the other hand, is made for serious use. If you need to get through a door, or make a shooting point through a mud-brick wall, the 172 will do it without blinking. It's like the 610 Rukus. Makes you even happier and is ready to take care of business. Steve :-> KnifeRights.org Charter Member #134 - how about you?

...Yeah...the Benchmade hawk is definately an extreme duty piece. It would be more like seven times the price of the SOG Tactical, if that makes it any better. If you do what I do with mine, take it out once in a while to train with and then leave it stashed under your bed most of the time, the SOG would undoubtedly serve just as well. You do get what you pay for though. The Benchmade has an integral handle, no handle bolts to fail, ever, and the handle is steel, so it is pretty much indestructible as a pry bar. The head is 1095, so you expect it to be much tougher than the 420 stainless steel head on the SOG. The Benchmade weighs about 50% more, so it should chop better. Whether the Benchmade is worth the extra investment just depends on your expectations for durability. 581BK-1102 Hybrid, 585-1BK Mini Barrage, 587SBK-1 Mini Warn, Bradley Alias I LE, 581, 525/Bone Collector, 941BLU, 520BK/Bone Collector, 760Ti Krein Regrind, 583SBK-1 Warn Tanto, HK14210, 707-701, 140HS, 551-101 Gold Grip, 941BC, 950BK M4, 220, 30, 42, 32, 53

My prototype 172 has become a safe queen. I am about ready to say the hell with it and see what the thing is capable of!
