Been using a Sharpmaker for the past three years and have no complaints. I'm pretty finicky about sharp and at some point may pick up an Edge Pro Apex. The SM has served me well- its the first sharpening device I've been able to use successfully- a nice sharp edge is a source of great satisfaction Smiler. Using the SM has also provided an opportunity to learn the "hows and whys" of sharpening, can use a stone much better now than ever before.

I had to put a combination because I use LifeSharp sometimes, a Sharpmaker, and I have taken up convex sharpening on a mouse pad and sandpaper (I stink at it, but I'm practicing).

I'm with fox - the sound of the blade on a good Arkansas stone is sweet. I like the way it feels, too.

I use a Sharpmaker for touchups or light maintenance. But I also use a whetstone for some serious sharpening. If I do use that carborundum stone, I always finish with an Arkansas fine stone. And, once in awhile I use a BM pocket sharpener in the field to fix chips or nicks in a blade's edge.

I use the EdgePro every time that the paper wheels don't do it. In my limited experience, the paper wheels do an awesome job of keeping a knife just about as sharp as you can get it, but sometimes you just need to start out with a nice clean fresh cut edge. When that happens I break out the EdgePro. It takes 15 or 20 minutes. The Wheels take 15 or 20 seconds.

I read somewhere that in the 19th century they used to sharpen Bowie knives by sliding them around the inner side of a crockery pickle barrel...which is about 18" diameter. The curvature of the surface held the knife at a constant angle which would have given a consistent edge angle. I imagine it also screwed up the looks of the spine of the blade, but on a real user, they probably didn't care.
