So I am looking at an Edge Pro Apex. The Pro model seems way too ridiculously expensive, I won't be sharpening for hours and I don't care that you can't use the scissor attachment on the Apex. The website has a few different packages available. In your opinions what package will do the trick for a guy who has a modest knife collection and just wants to get all his blades scary sharp? I don't know any thing about grits/stones yet and what I really need. I just want to sharpen my knives. I'm looking for advice from users of this system concerning what stones/grits they use and anybody who thinks they bought the wrong package i.e. they didn't get enough stones or they bought to many and they do not need them all. Basically what do I need top know and consider before the purchase? Thanks all. _____________________________ Tell me something I don't know... _____________________________ 1.(710SBKD2) 2.(710D2) 3.(710BKD2) 4.(710-1) 5.(710DLC-1) 6.(710HS) 7.(710-801) 8.(710 Pre Production) 9.(710-SPL Axis Special) 10.(710sbt ) 11.(710S) 11of?

The Apex 3 will get the job done. Nothing wrong with the tapes included with the Apex 4, but your edge will have a mirror edge even before using the tapes. ............................................................................................................... Big Boy- Yeah I hope so. I did a search on the subject (here) and read a bunch already. I know the system is good, I just wanna know which one to get. Which one does the job and which one just extra stuff you can buy because you have cash to burn (Which I do not). Thanks Taxesblow. PS_I love your forum name!!!! _____________________________ Tell me something I don't know... _____________________________ 1.(710SBKD2) 2.(710D2) 3.(710BKD2) 4.(710-1) 5.(710DLC-1) 6.(710HS) 7.(710-801) 8.(710 Pre Production) 9.(710-SPL Axis Special) 10.(710sbt ) 11.(710S) 11of?

Basically just hold off on a couple of knife purchases and the Apex becomes affordable. I sharpened three knives last night in the process of a couple of hours and they're nice and sharp. Go from 220, 320, 600 and 1000 stones and the tapes are not really necessary. 350, 520, 525BK-1101, 530, 580-1102, 580 Proto, 583-1, 585-1, 710-1, 710-2, 710D2, 710HS, 722, 732, 740, 740 Proto, 741, 745, 746, 746-1201, 750, 790, 800, 800HS, 805-1101, 810, 812, 830, 831, 835HS, 840, 845, 890, 905, 907D2, 910, 910SCG, 912D2, 913D2, 12400 Proto, 12410, 14205, 14210, 40022-100. I think I'm in the same boat as the OP. I have a lot of Randalls that I can't do with the Sharpmaker, and I would like to do more with the angle of the edges.

I got the Apex 4, and use it all. Granted, the tapes really are unnecessary, but they can be fun it you want to get a shinier edge. __________________________________ Benchmades, Spydercos, Microtechs, MCUSTAs, and an old rusty AK bayonet.

I got the 3 also, with the same reasoning that Taxesblow used. I suppose that, after going through all the tapes, I could put the edge under my 64X gemological microscope and (maybe) view scratches so minute that it's ridiculous to look for them anyway...but I wouldn't go to the bother. ************************************************************************ Charter Member #9 and Skullmaster °„° Lum Lunatics Brotherhood of the 420 Boomerangs 'n Butterflies: An Osborne Alliance | General, and Member #950 Pardue Pimps® #3 Jack of all Trades, and Good Enough to get Paid for All of Them. ************************************************************************ "No time for the old 'in-out,' luv - I've just come to read the meter!" -Alexander DeLarge (Prisoner Number Six Double Five Three Two One)

Since we're talking about EP's, I tried one of the 2000 grit polishing tapes this afternoon on my 831 Ascent in 440c and it came out looking pretty good...but I don't feel the need to do that step really, the 1000 grit stone does a good job by itself...I don't care about fine scratches, the knife is a user. 350, 520, 525BK-1101, 530, 580-1102, 580 Proto, 583-1, 585-1, 710-1, 710-2, 710D2, 710HS, 722, 732, 740, 740 Proto, 741, 745, 746, 746-1201, 750, 790, 800, 800HS, 805-1101, 810, 812, 830, 831, 835HS, 840, 845, 890, 905, 907D2, 910, 910SCG, 912D2, 913D2, 12400 Proto, 12410, 14205, 14210, 40022-100.
