This is kind of a late reply, but Wayne Goddard once said that he thought D-2 takes the sharpest edge of any steel. That was before the day of CPM, and he was speaking of cutting more than any microscopic examination of the edge, I'm sure, but cutting is what counts.

I have sharpened everything from Cobalt to CPM10V, and it all sharpens the same. You just need more abrasive sharpening mediums to sharpen the harder stuff in a reasonable time.

D-2 is great stuff, it takes a great edge and holds it a long time. It is pretty tough for a high alloy steel, and pretty stain resistant. Not as corrosion resistant as 154CM, but a lot more than 1095 or 52100.

It is great knife steel. 154CM, D-2, S30V, they all blurr together for me, about the same great performance from all.

If it is to be a user, get a 710D2BK.

Thanks for the added insight Po... Considering it is a tool steel, it does stand to reason that it will take a more abbrasive medium to get an initial edge on the blade.

I have the cabela's exclusive D2 Griptillian and LOVE it. D2 really is a "hard use steel". Mine is scary sharp and all I do is strop it with black and green stropping compounds. It' holds that shaving sharp edge for a long time too. I prefer D2 to 154cm any day! I prefer it to a lot of sub-standard S30v that is out there too.

710 is a nice knife!

Have used D2 quite a bit, just cant compare it to M2 or M4 as far as tool steels go.
Maybe its just me.
Prefer lots of steels to D2. again maybe its just me.

Also, the heat treat has a LOT to do with how things go........ Big Grin

Sounds like you are talking about the Left Handed Emerson Commander. I am a true lefty. The 710 is a great choice. I own several Emersons. I quit buying Emerson knives a while back due to their poor quality control. Maybe they are better now but they used to have real problems back around 2000. The fit and finish of any Benchmade is better than most any Emerson. Benchmade makes their own, Emerson was and probably still is contracted out.
