If you send a knife back into Benchmade to be "sharpened" and checked out after years of service to see if any parts need replacing (I found out that they TI the knife when it's sent in for sharpening when speaking to customer service about a specific model), do they replace or refinish any parts such as the pocket clip which have visible signs of wear and which they might still have in stock? I would really like the blade refinished as they no longer make this model so it can't be replaced, as refinishing it would help prevent rust and make it look a little better for wear.

It really doesn't need sharpening, as I take care of that myself, but I was thinking about sending in my old 806D2 AFCK for a "check-up" on the spacers and axis lock.

Would it void the warranty to have it refinished elsewhere if I get it back and it still looks "rough"?

What do you mean by "refinished?" If you mean can they re-coat the blade with a BT or BK finish, then no they cannot do that.

I think they can and do replace pocket clips, but I am not too sure, someone else can chime in on that. Also don't ship the knife with the original box, they will send it back with the gray warranty box and you will lose the original.

They will check the function of the knife and service what they can.

If you send the knife up for sevicing, as Mark says pack the knife in a small (USPS VHS-sized Priority mail boxes work great) with a note about what you want done, along with a check made out to Benchmade for $5 to cover return shipping. If you choose USPS I would suggest insuring the knife and paying for Delivery Confirm too.

What they will do: (as much as I know...) They will replace washers (from the older nylon ones to phosphor bronze), replace clips, sharpen the blade at no additional cost.

For additional charges they will replace the blade in the knife (IF they have the specific blade in stock) for $25. They will NOT refinish or polish out the blade.

If you have the blade replaced they will keep the old one...and the knife will be returned to you in a gray repair box usually via either FedEx or UPS.

IF there are questions I'd suggest calling their Customer Service line at 800-800-7427.

I know I've missed something but hope this helps.

I appreciate the information from both of you - and thanks about the box...I hadn't even thought about that. I was going to ship it in a USPS box, insured, and return receipt, but was thinking about sending it in the original box inside of that one...now - I definitely won't do so.

I guess I will send it in for servicing and just let it "wear it's battle scars" that it's earned over the time I've had it and continue to use it as my EDC.

Seems like Joe and Mark already hit the nail on the head regarding your questions, I will also add that there customer service is some of the best in the business, I have had nothing but stellar service when I have delt with there CS, and your 806 will return hair poppin sharp. I sent my 710sbk D2 in not to long ago and it came back scary sharp! Just make sure you mail the knife with a five dollar bill to cover the shipping back to your residence. BTW welcome to the forums sir.

You can also print this letter and include it with your knife. Include your info, what you want done and if you want a CC number.

I just sent my vintage 812sbt-LH in for a blade swap (last lefty mini-AFCK blade they had -- hasn't been made since around 2001), so they might even have a 806D2 blade to swap for you. $25 for stain finish, $35 for coated blade. Call and find out.

If the coating is what is important to you and not the markings, you could get it finished with an Ionbond DLC finish that will kick butt of rust and any Benchmade finish...
