I've used old belts many times. They work fine, but being cowhide they sometimes don't have the long-lasting tough surface that I get out of my $15 horsehide version.

Some guys strop on the leg of their blue jeans. Some use the back of a yellow writing pad. Steven Andrews, one of our members, actually uses the skin of his palm. I could never do that...too much blood involved and it must be hard to sew back on every time. Smiler

I have actually used the leg of my jeans and also the cardboard back of a notepad. I just figured I'd get better results using the right tool for the job.
This may be a dumb question but where would a get a piece of horsehide strop? (Without seriously pissing off a horse at the local stable Big Grin)

As long as you bring something for trade. But whatever it is, DO NOT offer cow hide. Horses pride themselves on the quality of their hide. So offering cow hide would be like asking the horse to trade down. If you have a tanner or maybe a sadle maker in your area you could ask them if they have any fine leather that you could use in a horse trade. But if you don't have either of those maybe a cobbler can help.

I get my cutlery grade leather strops from an old school cobbler shop not far from here. He 'does cow' with a lot of their shoes but says horsehide is best for knife blades.

There's usually a box of pre-made strips with holes already punched for hanging that only cost a couple of bucks.

It's a fun place with a case full of older Buck knives and Harley clothing.
