Hello all. I'm new to the forum and to Benchmade knives. I bought a 580 with some Christmas cash, and I'm loving it. My previous EDC was a Gerber Applegate/Fairbairn Covert, which served me well until I lost it somehow.
Obviously, Benchmade has a long line of fabulous blades, but I don't see a lot of posts on the Barrage, and I'm curious as to why not.
At any rate, I think it's great, and a Happy New Year to all!

I am often mistaken, but in general people here focus on G-10, aluminum and titanium handles. Also, assisted open knives like the 672 apparition and 890 Torrent don't get a lot of love. I've been on the fence about the 580, but I probably need one Smiler

Welcome 'Camguy'. Congrats on getting yourself a 580. There might be more focus on the exotics of Ti, G-10, or 'aluminium' over plain old Valox (say plastic...) BUT the assisted Axis mechanism is hard to beat for function and reliability.

I've got both the smaller 585 and the 580 and love both. The larger 580 definitely has more SNAP when opening, but I like it a lot.

Have a great New Years!

Joe

Thanks, all. I'm glad to be a part of this _very_ polite and civilized forum.
I love my new 580. Sure, "plastic" scales, but I prefer to think "fiberglass-reenforced composite". It fits my hand, beautifully balanced...and, while I don't remember the original poster(s), thanks for the tip on stropping the blade on cardboard. Works like a charm!

The 580/5 has been out for a few years, and therefore the flurry of post about it will be buried in the past. Many of us prefer the WARN Tanto, which is a cousin of sorts to the 580.

The 580 is a good knife, however the material and shape of the handle come together to give a less than secure feeling in hand. I wish they would just make the whole sale jump to G-10 for the knife.

I've got a 585-1 and a 580 Proto...the G-10 makes a huge difference in how it operates. MUCH grippier.

Both 585/580 knives should've come that way, IMO.

I have a couple of the 580's and really like them. I had one of the 583's with the g-10 handle and like you guys said above, it definitely has more grip but I decided it was just to heavy. I just looked up the weight for both and Benchmade has the weight for the 583 at 5.4 ounces and the 580 at 4.2 ounces. For some reason that makes a big difference to me.

HEY Camguy

I’m a big fan of the 580.
There was a lot of buzz about it when it first came out.
It’s a big jump from the knife you lost to the Barrage.
Congratulations and stick around for a once a year happening on the forum.

The release of new models for the Benchmade Elders approval.
