I've had a Benchmade 580 Barrage for about 3 months now, and it's been used VERY lightly (I carry it 1-2 days a week, it hasn't even needed resharpening because I rarely use it to cut anything). Just recently, it has developed a problem where it becomes excessively difficult to close the knife; I have to hold the axis bar down and then close the knife manually, then release the axis bar. It feels like the axis bar is grinding heavily against the tang of the knife, but I can't see any debris in there that would make it do that, and the knife has been kept quite clean. I've used quite a bit of oil and compressed air in an attempt to dislodge any debris and to get the knife to close properly, but to no avail. I'm considering taking it apart or sending it back; anyone have any suggestions?

I'm not one to take apart and put together again. I would send it to Benchmade for a quality repair. 6 days tops. Shoot...you just might get a new pocket clip to boot.

But do you know what could be wrong with it? I'd like to at least find out if this is a problem people have had before, so I can prevent it from happening again

It can't be the pivot, the knife works perfectly when the axis bar is held down. It has to be something with the bar, I can feel it grinding the tang and getting stuck...

I think I will send it back, but I'm going to let some family members take a look at it, and see if they can see anything wrong with it that I can't.

in my humble opinion there's stuff you can do and stuff you can't. changing springs or clean the knife. I do it all the time.
It's very interesting to disassemble a knife a see how it works or trying to fix it by yourself...
but in your case you should send it to Benchmade..
you have a Lifetime warranty on your knife... and if you want to know what's the problem you should make a note an ask Benchmade.

It sounds like a tolerance issue with the AXIS bar. I would send it to us, and we'll take care of you for sure. If you want to discuss before hand, you can contact Product Services at 1-800-800-7427.

If you send it in, the address is:
BKC
Attn: Warranty Dept.
300 Beavercreek Rd.
Oregon City, OR 97045

On a side note-- It's not advised to use WD-40 on
your knives! Smiler
