Anyone know how this works? what kind of spring? I got my 580 last week and it just broke today. It felt like an auto coil spring breaking. I called BM and they seemed shocked but of course would take care of the repair. Love this knife as just an axis opener as well so I may not send it in right away.

jarbo, it uses a coil spring similar to a normal axis-auto, but i think the cut-out in the blade is different to accommodate the assist mechanism. you can see a diagram of the lock here. i am surprised to hear it broke this quickly. good luck with the repair. _______________ - Jesse. That sucks!! So far I have been really inpressed by the 580 so far. Huh, well I guess there are a few that are bound to have a kink in them. ____________________ Allen Elishewitz Preservation Society. 730, 910HS x2 I being poor have only my dreams, I spread my dreams beneath your feet, tread softly, for you tread on my dreams. I hope this isnt something that will continue. I went away from autos due to the fact if the coil spring broke, there was no other means of deployment but to push the button and pinch the blade with your fingers. The good thing is, the 580 makes a great smooth axis lock in case. This message has been edited. Last edited by: jarbo,

Is this really rare? I would like to think I can rely on my 9100 auto Stryker but this makes me think twice..... Has anyone had the 9100 break like this? "I see you have constructed a new lightsaber."

I had my 2550 and 9100 both break in the past. I keep a stock of springs around for just that. The springs that BM puts in are not as strong as the after market ones. I was ok with this after I figured out how to swap them. The 580 though is pretty difficult to. I looked at the insides and said no way. I am sending it in...

Man now I'm paranoid my 9100 auto Stryker will break which sucks since it's not cheap I bought it because I thought it had a lifespan of many years "I see you have constructed a new lightsaber."

I would get a few extra springs just in case though if you are comfortable chainging them yourself.

I have a 585 mini that I've dulled the heck out of from using it so much over the past 2 weeks... It's given me no problems whatsoever except being a little worn for wear at the edge- which of course is easily fixed by a trip to the local knife shop. "Audentes Fortunas Juvat" ~Virgil
