I have not heard a single 585 spring break.

Has anyone?

not me either I guess. I think it was just the 580's but don't know for sure.

Since I'm considering getting a 580 or 585 (or both? Wink) I was reading this thread. The number of reports of failure in the spring assist was troubling. After trying to find more info by other routes I called BM today. The person I talked to did acknowledge there was (past tense) a known problem with the springs and the problem had been corrected. Anything shipping from them currently should be fine. 580/5s from any dealer who turns his stock rapidly should also be fine.
Now I guess I'll wait awhile and see if there are many more reports of problems.

Hopefully anyone who has problems with recently shipped items will let us know.

DO you have a date and shipment or what not?

No. I neglected to pin them down to a date when the problem was discovered. At the time of my call, July 15, the problem had been fixed.
Since that time I have not seen any reports of spring problems in either of the 2 threads here about the 580/5s.

Hey Guys, I was just letting you know that these spring issues aren't resolved yet.

I won't go through the whole back story, but I have had two different 580's fail on me. I am now about to have to send in this latest 580 to benchmade for the THIRD time.

I can't speak for the 585s, but I can tell you that the 580s are to be avoided at all cost. The failure rate makes them expensive TOYS, not TOOLS.

It has failed on me so many times now, I hate to handle it. I just can't get over the feeling that it is going to break at any moment, and that is not how a knife should be.
