I was reading some threads about storing knives and being a newbie I never thought about this. should I store my 585BK open or closed? safety or no safety? all comments appreciated. 5000 BT blu, 3300BK, 275BK.

Automatics are under some tension regardless but I don't think any of the Assisted Openers are under any tension open - you can feel the spring being loaded as you finish closing them. I store most of my knives open because they're in displays but I wouldn't worry about it. Springs that are under the loads they're designed for don't fail sitting under the load or due to cycling. They may fail due to metal fatigue and they will fail if you stress them too far but I think the odds of the spring in a well-made knife failing are pretty darn low. It doesn't really matter too much. You fatigue springs and torsion bars by using them all the time, every day. They don't break down either by storing them open or closed. If you're afraid of wearing them out, don't open and close them for hours each day. -----=====-----=====-----=====----- KnifeRights Member

I suspect the spring is heat treated to retain the tension memory. I am going to doubt that storing them closed is going to be a problem. I own a 7500S I bought 15 years ago and it has been stashed away the entire time. I checked it the other day and it opens just as hard and fast as it did when I bought it.
