So about a year ago I found a BM 9050 AFO just lying on the ground in my old neighborhood. I knew how much it was worth so I checked with everyone I knew in the area and no one knew whos it was so I decided to hold on to it.

I just recently discovered that you can send your knife to BM and get the blade replaced. Can I do that even though I didn't actually purchase mine? Does it need to be registered in order to get the blade replaced? Can I register it even though I found it?

Your biggest problem will be the fact it is an auto. If you live in Oregon your golden if not well its gonna be harder. If you live in an automatic knife friendly state you could take it to an authorized Benchmade dealer and they may send it in for you for the blade swap. And the other possible issue is the 9050 is discontinued so I'd check and see if they have any blades left over.

i live in south carolina and i know autos are legal here. does that fact that i'm active duty military help my situation at all? i talked to a guy at a local gun shop that sold BM's and he said something about how BM will only sell/ship autos to military and law enforcement in south carolina.

does anyone know if i need to register the knife before i send it in, or if i can register without having paid for it?

also, the 9050 is not discontinued, they still sell them on their website.

I think you have to establish your credentials with benchmade for them to ship an automatic knife back to an individual requardless of your particular state law. They won't ship it back unless your law enforcement, active military, authorized government employee or a knife dealer. You shouldn't have a problem but take care of verifying yourself with them "before" you send it to them. It isn't necessary to register the knife online or even to be the original owner, but a call to customer service is always the best advice on these things. Good luck and keep us informed. Benchmade has an excellent service dept.

Being that your active duty it helps alot. They have a form to fill out and it all should be just fine. And the 9050 is discontinued but they came out with the 9051 and 9052 which are almost identical just have some upgrades. So I'd check and see if the blades are comparable or if Rey still have the 9050 blades in stock.

One other issue about your knife that I've seen mentioned before...if it's an older model without a safety, then benchmade may be inclined to just exchange your knife for a new one rather than working on it, even if a replacement blade is available. Just another consideration....like I suggested before...call them to make sure about all the facts.
