I'm not starting this discussion to disrespect police officers, although I'm not particularly inclined to praise most of them, either. Rather, the issue of people asking police officers about carry and possession laws is my aim here. Specifically, I want to address the fact that police officers often know less about many laws than the average person on the street knows. They're not lawyers (for whom I also seldom retain a glowing admiration,) which is why so many criminals get off on technicalities.

Also, I know that, if I were serving as a police officer (I have done some military time augumenting USAF Law Enforcement, as well as Police Reserve in Biloxi, MS,) that I would likely advise civilians NOT to carry a weapon that could threaten my life in the performance of my duties.

A story I like to tell is about the time I sold an S&W 429 stainless .44 Magnum to a friend back in MS. After leaving my house, my friend was pulled over for speeding. The County Sheriff who pulled him over found the handgun during a search, and my "friend" told him he'd just bought it from me. The problem was the ammo I had included with the sale. There were a couple of boxes of Winchester Black Talons, which had (then) recently been removed from production due to pressure from anti-gun activists who thought (quite incorrectly) that the bullet was armor-piercing.

The Sheriff insisted that the ammo I gave away with the gun was "illegal" and that I could get into severe trouble for selling it. Fortunately, I did say that I had given it, not sold it. My point is, the ammunition in question is not now, nor has it ever been illegal to buy, own or sell. In fact, Winchester markets the same round without the black coating as the Ranger SXT. The SXT is an acronym meaning Supreme Expansion Technology, but many firearm enthusiasts with a sense of humor refer to it as the Same eXact Thing.

All of this (and I apologize for the lengthy post) is to say that, while I don't know whether this sheriff really thought the ammo was illegal, or simply wanted to get it off the street, asking an officer of the law about what is legal to own or carry is often fruitless.

Go to your courthouse and find out for certain. Or hire a lawyer you think you can trust to do the work for you. Either way, you'll have actual proof.

After checking around, I found that Winchester no longer manufactures the Ranger SXT. It wasn't made illegal, they simply stopped making it.

Why is this posted here in the auto/spring assisted section?

If you have a beef with the POLICE, go whine about it somewhere else.

Second that buddy, first of all you posted this in the wrong section... second I notice you are pretty new to this forum and already wanting to complain because you had a bad experience with LEO so that makes ALL LEO bad? What gives you the justification to claim that Police Officers know less knowledge about the law than a average person or lawyer.. have you been through BLET? do you have a degree in Law Enforcement.. Go whine some where else, oh and just to let you know that black talon ammo was banned a while back because it could penetrate a bullet proof vest, now that ammo is still being produced but under a different name "Winchester Ranger +p+" and you can pick that ammo up all day long at guns shows.... And second of all when you sold that gun to your "buddy" you should have went through a FFL dealer unless your "buddy" had a CCW permit..

Very True RX but it is a safe way to cover your end in case that gun ever gets in too the wrong hands and used in a crime, then the serial numbers on the gun will be ran and come back to you. A way to avoid that is go through a FFL, they will transfer the Gun into that persons name so you will no longer be affilated with that firearm..

Nope, I wasn't at all complaining about law enforcement officers, as I stated in the opening sentence. I noticed somebody mentioning in this section that they were advised by a policeman that carrying a stiletto was "a good way to get arrested" and, as a result, sold his knives. I wanted to show by example that cops don't always know the law and, he may very well have been within his rights and freedoms to keep his knives. I suppose I should have mentioned that reason.

Also, Black Talon ammunition was never banned. Ever! And it never was an "armor piercing" round, nor could it penetrate a bullet-proof vest. It was represented that way (and even referred to as "cop killer" bullets) by gun control fanatics who put pressure on to have the round banned, but the real story is that it had a coating that made the bullet black, not armor-piercing. But it never was banned!! It was voluntarily removed from production by Winchester.

No, I have no degree in law enforcement but, as I said, I did serve as military LE and with Biloxi Police Reserve, so I do have some experience. Enough to know that cops aren't all-knowing. And all my facts are straight.

I'm not whining about LEOs, but I do know that not one officer knows every law. I didn't mean for this discussion to be about bullets, firearms or LEO bashing. All I wanted to say is that every person should research their own local laws before tamely giving up their right to own and carry on the word of one cop, who may not be fully aware of what is or isn't legal.

I agree with that Law Enforcement officers dont know every answer when it comes to the law, its impossible to memorise every single law in existence with in one state... thats what I dont get sometimes all people want to do is talk negative about police men more than positive.. I guess its just our society and news that make people thank that way.. who knows... Roll Eyes Depending on what the situation or question is regarding Legal Advise I will refer people to a lawyer for legal advise thats what Lawyers are for... Law enforcement Enforces the law... If I sounded like a came off on a bad note I was not intended too, I hear people complain every day about how we dont do our jobs right when they have no idea what we deal with on a daily basis or "think" they know and the tune gets a little old sometimes.... By the way welcome to the forum... Its a great group of people here.. Big Grin
